Maolan Karst Forest Natural Conservation has the best preserved original forest of karst landform in China central subtropical zone. It is a miracle of world forest.

Maolan Karst Forest Natural Conservation is located in Libo County. The central subtropical karst forest ecosystems and rare or endangered species are main protected objects. It was recognized as “World Cultural and Natural Heritage” by UNESCO in 2007 and it is the first and the only world cultural and natural heritage in Guizhou province.

A Natural Resource Museum

Maolan Karst Forest Natural Conservation is a large natural resource museum, and it has the best preserved original forest of karst landform in China central subtropical zone. Its area is over 130 square kilometers with forest coverage of 91.59 percent. There are vascular bundle plant species of 1,203, and arbor tree species of over 500, such as gingkgo called as living fossil, trembling poplar and so on. There are handeliodendron bodinieri and ampelocalamus actinotrichus which only have in China. Animals are musk deer, macaque, south china tiger, urus, bear, leopard, white monkey etc. Silver Pheasant Mountain Ecological Positioning Observation Station is the only observation station in China to research karst forest ecology.

As the unique scenic resource all over the world, Maolan Karst Forest Natural Conservation surpasses the traditional karst barren scene, and it emerges different mountain and water scenes, underground caves and green forests, which presents perfect natural scenery. Maolan Karst Forest Natural Conservation is reputed as “the Lord of Mountains and Waters”, and it is a miracle of world forest.

There are tourism scenic spots such as Latan Waterfall, Karst caves, featured forest, and ethnic nationality custom and so on.

What to Appreciate

Funnel Forest

Lots of large and small trees with their roots naked grow on the rock. After a long lapse of time, the roots and rocks kink together, and these peculiar natural scenes form special “Karst Funnel” forest scene.

Latan Waterfall

Latan Waterfall is the largest waterfall in Maolan Natural Conservation, and its head drop is 70 meters and 20 meters in width. The Karst cliffs are covered by green, with waterfall splashing, and it is like a slivery white ribbon floating on the green cliffs.

Golden Lion Cave

Golden Lion Cave is a natural karst cave, and it is named so because there is a huge lion formed by natural limestone standing in the cave.

Maolan Natural Conservation is a gathering place for minority nationalities, and there are lots of cultural relics and historic sites. There are minority nationalities like Bouyei, Shui, Miao, Zhuang and Yao etc living there, and Bouyei is the main nationality. The feature of each nationality such as building, clothes, artifact, food and weddings and funerals etc all can be found here. The locals live in harmony with nature.
