Guiyang History

Having a long history about more than 400 years, Guiyang, the capital of Guizhou Province, is one of the center cities in southwestern China. Guiyang is the first National Forest City in China. About 85 percent area of the land is karst, the landscape is very magnificent and pretty with peaks, channeling, gorges, karst cave together.
 

In Ancient Times


In Tang Dynasty (618-907), Guiyang belonged to Juzhou and in Song Dynasty (960-1279), Guiyang was called Guizhou. In 1413, Guizhou became the 13th province formally in Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). In 1568, the Chengfanfu (Huishui County at present) was merged into Guizhou. In 1569, Fancheng Fu was named Guiyang Fu, which was the beginning of Guiyang as a name for administrative region. In 1601, the Guiyang Fu was upgraded to Guiyang Military and Civilians Fu.

In 1659, Qing Dynasty set up grand coordinator in Guizhou and stationed in Guiyang Military and Civilians District. In 1687, the Guiyang Military and Civilians District were changed into Guiyang City. In 1749, Guiyang City managed about 8 counties. At the end of Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), Guiyang Fu governed four counties, and three prefectures.
 

In the Time of Republic of China


In 1914, Guiyang Fu was taken place by Guiyang County. In 1936, Guizhou Province was divided into 8 districts. The Guiyang County belonged to the first chief inspector of the district. In 1937, Guiyang County was managed directly by provincial government. In 1941, Guiyang City was built firstly and formally.
 

After People's Republic of China Founded


In 1949, November, government of Guiyang City was set up. In 1955, the government of Guiyang City was named peoples council of Guiyang City. In 1996, according to the permission given by the State Council, the Qingzhen City, Xiuwen County, Xifeng County and Kaiyang County which were managed by Anshun Area were divided into Guiyang City. In 2000, Jinyang New Area in northwest of Guiyang City began to be constructed. Nowadays, Guiyang is a multi-ethnic city. The embroidery and cross-stitch work are the traditional national crafts which have the characteristics of the minorities. The embroidery of Miao is the most typical with rich color, delicate stitch and national flavor.
