Located in the central area of the Macau Peninsula, Senado Square is one of the four largest squares in Macau and was added into the UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2005.
Known as Largo de Senado in Portuguese, Senado Square is located in the central area of the Macau Peninsula. It covers an area of 3,700 square meters and is one of the four largest squares in Macau. Facing south to the new road, Senado Square shaped like a long and narrow triangle. At present, it is a busy commercial and cultural district. As it forms part of Historical center of Macau, Senado Square was added into the UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2005.
The whole square is paved with a wave-patterned mosaic of colored stones. Benches are provided here, so people like to have a rest here. It has been a prosperous business district and thronged with a variety of shops and restaurants, in which attract the local residents as well as the overseas tourists shopping here.
The buildings around the Senado Square have a long history and have many western features. The two or there storeys building are well protected by the authority and no one is allowed to alter the facades of these buildings. The western buildings, such as the Rose Hall, Kindness Hall, as well as the Leal Senado coexisted with the Chinese buildings, which represent the harmoniously connection between the oriental and western culture. Nowadays, a number of celebrations are hosted in Senado square . It is the venue to the most of the public activities and religious festivals.
History
Senado square was built in 1918 to link Praia Grande with the inner harbor. Since it has been in front of the Leal Senado Building, it was named as Senado Square. During the era of Portuguese control this is where the Macau authorities used to review the troops on their inaugurations. Now, it is the central district of Macau, where the succeeding the governors looked over military troops and the police force at the time of their inauguration. A variety of celebrations are hosted here.
Memorial Archway
Memorial Archway is usually three layers and modeled like the Tiananmen Square in Beijing. It is as high as the buildings nearby and decorated with the characters of Macau compatriots celebrating the National Day and inscribed with the political slogan at that time. Every year, the themed painting ceremony will be held here.
Fountain
The Fountain is built on the site of a bronze statue of a Portuguese soldier named Mesquita. It is decorated with a dozens of color lamplight. During the holidays, the fountain gives priority to the intermediate water column and is set off by the surrounding water columns. Two stages of color lamplight shine alternately, which add some fun to the daily life of the local people.
