Reed Flute Cave, nicknamed the Palace of Natural Arts, is a landmark and top tourist attraction in Guilin renowned as a natural limestone cave with multicolored lighting.
Reed Flute Cave is located in the northwest suburb of Guilin, about 5 kilometers from the city center. With the depth of 240 meters, it serves people 500 meters long sightseeing. It is reputed as the "Palace of Natural Arts" for its inner exquisite scenes composed of the odd-shaped stalagmites, stalactites and stone flowers.
The most outstanding one can be counted to the Crystal Palace where is said lived the King Dragon in legend. Rated as a Top Scenic Spot, it is now equipped with an artificial lighting system to enhance the experience of tourists visiting the cave.
Origin of the Name
As a place where wild cats and small animals often haunted, it once was named “Wild Cat Cave”. Later on for the entrance was once distinguished by clumps of reeds used to fashion musical instruments-flute, hence the name Reed Flute Cave.
Journey to Amazing Caves
It's tempting to slip away from the tour groups, but bring a torch, as the illuminations are often turned off as the crowds walk on. The huge Reed Flute Cave is a garish but nonetheless impressive grotto housing multicolored lighting and fantastic stalactites and stalagmites.
Crystal Palace
With the width of 93 meters, Crystal Palace is the widest land in Reed Flute Cave. The suspending palace lantern adds a layer of the magical color to the whole chamber, which as if offered the spot that the Dragon King lived a free life here. Compared with the other passage caves, this part is flat and empty for sparse stalactites concentrate in this chamber.
Inner spectacular scenery
Inside this water-eroded cave is a spectacular world of various stalactites, stone pillars and rock formations created by carbonate deposition. It is suggested to take a U-shaped sight-seeing route so that no spots can be missed. Illuminated by colored lighting, the fantastic spectacle is found in many variations along this 240-meter-long cave. Walking through the serried stone pillars, tourists feast their eyes on changing spots, feeling they are in a paradise where the Gods live. The remarkable stalactites, stalagmites and other rock formations showcase a myriad of fanciful shapes, such as curtains, birds, flowers and animals, which inspire endless and wonderful imagination.
Each rock formation has a legendary and poetic name, such as Crystal Palace, Dragon Pagoda, Virgin Forest, Flower and Fruit Mountain, Pines in the Snow, Red Curtain and other interesting names. Plenty of imagination is useful for tourist to feel each landscape. Both the stories and the lighting add mystery to the scene.
Outside the cave
Feiluan Bridge
Located in the intersection of Peach Blossom River and Reed Flute Road, it is an elegant stone bridge seen at the first time entering the Reed Flute Cave Scenic Area. It is 62.4 meters long and 10.5 meters wide. There are 14 small arches inserted with black lime stones. Long history as it has, this bridge had experienced war damage in 1941.
Cave wall cultural in Reed Flute Cave
Apart from the majestic landscape in the Reed Flute Cave, the inscriptions on the wall left by ancient poets are also luring flooding of scholars. There are 77 units of wall books carved in different periods, including Tang (618-907), Song (960-1279), Yuan (1271-1368), Ming (1616-1912) and the Republic of China (1903-1949) times. The content is mainly about the contemporary actual events. All these have reflected the long history of Reed Flute Cave.
