It is one of the most popular entertainment areas for foreign expats and tourists in Beijing, featuring for its numerous characteristic bars, international stores, good restaurants and prominent location near embassies. The business hours of the street is from afternoon to next day morning.
Development of the Street
Originally, the area is a village which was three kilometers from inner Beijing City. San means three, Li means kilometer while Tun means village. That’s why it got the name Sanlitun. In 1960s Prime Minister Zhou Enlai ordered to build diplomatic area for foreign embassies. The fist bar was set up here in 1985 and since then more and more bars were set and the bar street became famous in Beijing.
In recent years, with the rising of Houhai Bar Street and Nanluogu Alley, today’s Sanlitun Bar Street is not so popular as before. In order to attract more people, Village shopping mall, Ya Show Market as well as good restaurants is set up here. The area is still very popular among foreigners.
