Located on the west bank of the Lake Lord Bao in Kaifang City, Memorial Temple of Lord Bao was built to memorize Lord Bao Zheng, an upright official during the Song Dynasty (960-1279).

Memorial Temple of Lord Bao was built to commemorate the famous upright official Bao Zheng in the Song Dynasty (960-1279). It is situated in the west bank of the picturesque Lake Lord Bao in Kaifeng City, Henan Province. It was listed as one of the key scenic spots in the central plain travel zone developed by the National Tourism Bureau.

About Lord Bao Zheng

Bao Zheng was an upright and incorruptible official and a political reformer in the Song Dynasty. When he was a fuyin (a judicial official) in Kaifeng, he fought against the corruptions and protected the ordinary people from being exploited bravely and unyieldingly. People in Kaifeng were grateful to him and established this temple to commemorate him and what he did. He is respected and worshiped for centuries. The temple was built in the Jin (1115-1234) and Yuan Dynasties (1271-1368) and rebuilt after the damage of the flood.

The Layout of the Temple

Covering an area of one hectare, Memorial Temple of Lord Bao is a group of ancient architectures following the Song Dynasty’s architecture style. It is magnificent, splendid and solemn. The temple consists of three parts, the main exhibition area, the garden and the service area. The main exhibition hall is composed of the first gate, the second gate, a wall screen, the stele pavilion, the first hall, the second hall and the corridor hall on the both sides. With relics, historical materials, bronze sculpture, waxwork, models, rubbings, inscriptions and portrait, Lord Bao’s whole life is shown vividly.

The Main Hall

With a height of more than 3 meters and a weight of 2.5 tons, the bronzen sculpture in the main hall is the most conspicuous one. Lord Bao sits up straight in his chair solemnly and wears his robe. His one hand is placed on the chair and the other one clenched, which shows a great spirit. The historical relics and materials with the information about the whole life and achievements about Lord Bao are displayed besides the sculpture.

The Second Exhibition Hall

One of Lord Bao’s inspiring poets written when his political career started, Memorial Monument of Kaifeng Government, Bao Family Precepts, calligraphy and Epitaph, of Lord Bao are displayed here. The family rule, “the offspring of his family, who corrupted in the official post should not be allowed to return to his home and buried in the family ancestral cemetery.” shows his upright and honest vividly.
