Mickey Mouse has met an unexpected obstacle on his chirpy march to bring Walt Disneys consumer culture into China C ancestor worship. Amid rice fields and bamboo groves south of Shanghai, hundreds of villagers are resisting plans to dig up family graves in order to make way for the first Disneyland in mainland China.

Its harder than persuading them to move out of their homes, lamented one of three local officials charged with the task. A house just equals money but to disturb the forefathers is a trauma for generations.

Officials are using tact and cajolery to avoid spoiling the news that more than 2 billion is to be lavished on what Disney calls a Magic Kingdom theme park with traits tailored to the Shanghai region. Many contributors to the websites of Chinese television and the Peoples Daily complain that Disney fare is an insult to Chinas ancient culture. One commentator went so far as to predict that Disneys seductive array of characters would destroy the nascent Chinese cartoon industry.

Shanghai Disneyland final location announced

The new Disney theme park will be built in Chuansha town of the Pudong New Area in Shanghai, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) announced on its website yesterday.

The park will initially cover 116 hectares, making it the smallest of Disney theme parks worldwide. Hong Kong Disneyland, which occupies an area of 126 hectares, is the second smallest, according to AP.

The NDRC's announcement was the first time that authorities confirmed the location of the park, although earlier media speculation has pinpointed the area.

China.org.cn reports that the news has pushed property prices in the area to quadruple from three years ago. Today, house prices in Chuansha are pegged at 12,000 yuan (1,178 euros) per square meter.

The Shanghai government received approval from the authorities last month to build the theme park in partnership with Walt Disney Co. The park is scheduled to open in 2014.

In related news, the Walt Disney Co. announced on Sunday that production will start on the Chinese version of the hit High School Musical.

The movie, which has become a worldwide phenomenon, was created uniquely for the Chinese audience, Xinhua reported.

The Chinese version tells of a new student who meets a gifted young man who shares her secret passion for singing. With the help of their friends they overcome the odds to win an inter-school singing competition and discover their true calling in the process, the report said.

The film is scheduled to be released in summer 2010.

SHANGHAI, Dec. 18 C Mickey Mouse and ghosts may not be the first things that come to mind when one mentions Disneyland as authorities plan to move 1,200 graves found on the construction site of the mainlands first Disney theme park.

Chuansha county residents will receive RMB300 for each relative moved to a new burial ground reports Shanghai Daily. More than 400 tombs have been moved so far, said Ding Guojun, the general manager of Huilong Cemetery.

The Chinese value their burial customs, believing that funeral sites must be chosen well or restless ghosts of ancestors wreak bad luck to their descendants. Typically, cemeteries are found on hillsides since it is believed this improves a sites feng shui or geomantic omen.

Negotiations for the Shanghai Disneyland project took years to gain traction and was only approved last month. It will be one of the largest foreign investments in the country and the second Disney theme park in Chinese territory after Hong Kong Disneyland.
