Tiger Leaping Gorge

Tiger Leaping Gorge is divided into three passages with the total length of 25 kilometers. They are the Upper Gorge, the Middle Gorge and the Lower Gorge. East to the mysterious Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and west to the Haba Snow Mountain, it is one of the deepest canyons in the world due to its vertical height of 3,790 meters.

Why it is called Tiger Leaping Gorge?

The narrowest part between rivers is only about 30 meters which legend has it that a fierce tiger had used a rock as its stepping stone to leap across the 30-meter gorge, that is why the Tiger Leaping Gorge got its name.

The inner gorge hides the most breathtaking sceneries. 21 rapids and 10 waterfalls are situated there; each scenic spot is capable of stunning your eyes. The Lower Gorge has been the most inspiring part of all. The gorge, in which the Golden Sand River pounds furiously at its rocky shores in an awesome fashion, sending up plenty of white froth, is a dreamland for adventurers.

Walnut Garden

Walnut Garden is a small village between the Middle Gorge and the Lower Gorge. It was all over the walnut trees before hence the name Walnut Garden. It is more like a harbor for visitors that most of travelers prefer to stay a night here after a whole day hiking. When you wake up in the morning and open the doors, you will realize the real “come to the point”.

Tiger Leaping Stone

Tiger Leaping Stone is one of the most famous scenic spots of the Upper Gorge. This stone is the stepping stone for the fierce tiger which used to jump across the gorge. The body of Tiger Leaping Stone is the narrowest segment of the entire gorge. This stone is about 13 meters high, as if an isolated peak breaks out among the roaring river.

Hiking there

Located where the river passes between 5,596 meter Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and 5,396 meters Haba Xueshan in a series of rapids under steep 2,000 meters cliffs, Tiger Leaping Gorge inspires a sense of adventure and satisfies the deepest yearnings for magnificent scenery because there is only a simple gravel road for hiking. On the way, you will see a fair number of guesthouses and other unexpected scenes such as the poring rivers and waterfalls.

What about the Weather here

Situated in the high altitude area, Tiger Leaping Gorge has a changeable weather which is special compared to China or all over the world. The winter is cold and the summer is very dry and hot though it rains a lot. Owing to the complicated terrain, there are four seasons in a day. So visitors are suggested to take more clothes and bring an umbrella in case of the bad weather.
