72-hour Visa-free Transit Limits and Requirements

After the policy of 72-hour visa-free stay in China carries out since January 1, 2013, there will be more international visitors benefit from this policy. However, there are some limitations for foreign visitors. "Visa-free Transit" means the policy that foreign visitor go to the third destination country (region) transiting a country, and there is no need applying for of transit visa and foreign visitor can have a short stay in transit country. The 72 hours will be counted from the time when the transit permit is approved instead of the time when the flight lands at the airport.


Requirements


Not all foreign visitors can enjoy the 72-hour visa-free stay in China, but only visitors from 45 countries listed for 72-hour visa-free stay in China. Besides, a qualified foreign visitor should have valid international travel documents, the third country visas and dated air tickets within 72 hours or other certificates. The airlines that take the transit visitors need to declare the transit application to Beijing or Shanghai port inspection organs.


Limitation


1. the policy of the 72-hour visa-free stay in China is only limited by air through Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG), Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport (SHA), Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) and Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN), and other forms of transportation are not applicable;
2. foreign visitor with 72-hour visa-free stay only stay in the city of entry within the given time, and they must depart from the port they entry;
3. the policy only aims at the foreign visitors who transit China to the third destination country, so foreign visitors going to China from or back to the same country can not enjoy this policy;
4. if any force majeure happens, foreign visitors need to apply for a Chinese visa.


Punishment


Whether or not a foreign visitor with the 72-hour visa-free stay in China, they must comply with Chinese law. Foreign visitors who must enter and depart China in the same port, and meanwhile, they can only stay in city of entry until their departure. If there are any special reasons, they have to leave entry city, or could not depart timely within 72 hours, and they should apply for a Chinese visa from public security bureau. However, if any foreign visitor who breaches China law would be warned, fined and detained, even more to be prohibited to enter China again.
