Situated in a rich oasis at the junction of Gansu, Qinghai and Xinjiang provinces, Dunhuang connects Qilian Mountains in the south and vast desert in the west. Covering an area of 31,200 km², the city’s symbol is a Rebound Pipa Statue deriving from Dunhuang murals in Mogao Grottoes.
Dunhuang was founded in 111 BC in Han Dynasty and played an important role on ancient Silk Road. During the Sui and Tang dynasties, the Buddhism got great development in the area and the monks painted murals inside the Mogao Grottoes. Today, the city has been declined for its role on Silk Road but is famous for its Buddhist art and manuscripts, which were put on UNESCO's list of the world's cultural heritage worthy of special protection.
