Urumqi Transportation

Urumqi is developed in tourism so you don't have to worry about getting there or getting around. Air, train, long-distance bus will all get you to the city and taxis will get you to the place you want to go.

Get around

Taxi is the most convenient, also the safest way to get around in Urumqi.

Most journeys around town are CNY10 to CNY15. Remember to ask for the receipt from the taxi driver when you getting of the car. The information like the car number, the name of Taxi Company and taxi complaint number are all listed on the receipt.

Notice: Remember to tell the staff of your hotel to write down the Chinese name of the hotel, because almost no taxi driver in Urumqi speaks English.

Get there

Urumqi International Airport is one of the most important airports in western China. It is a passageway connecting China and Middle Asia, West Asia, Europe and Africa.

The Urumqi Airport includes two terminal buildings—T2 and T3. Terminal 3 was newly opened in 2009, operating all of the international flights from and to Urumqi.

Urumqi Intrenational Airport operates inter-city flights in Xinjiang Province, including Korla, Kuqa, Aksu, Kashgar, Hotan, Qiemo, Yining, Karamay, Tuscaloosa, Fuyun, Altay.

Airport transportation

The shuttle bus departure station in the city is Kempinski Hotel. It takes only about half an hour from Kempinski Hotel directly to the airport. Cost: CNY10 per person

Long-distance Bus

Long-distance buses go to most cities in Xinjiang every day. There are also special tourist lines to Heavenly Lake (120 kilometers), Southern Pastures (75kilometers), Turpan (200kilometers), Shihezi (150kilometers), etc.

In-city- Bus

Urumqi buses go serve the commercial center, residential areas, villages and tourist destinations. The bus service has approximately 100 routes and uses 2,000 vehicles.

The Railway Station is located in the south of Urumqi city. Passengers may take bus No. 8 and 52 to get there.

Chinese cities


Urumqi is linked by rail to six major Chinese cities, including Xian, Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu, Zhengzhou and Lanzhou.


Xinjiang cities

Train services also connect Urumqi with other main cities in Xinjiang, such as Korla, Aksu, Kuitun, and Liuyuan.
