Jiaxing Travel Guide

Jiaxing is located in the southeastern part of China's coastline and in the center of Yangtze River Delta. It abuts on Shanghai to the east, Suzhou to the north, Hangzhou to the west and Hangzhou Bay to the south. It covers a land area of 3,915 sq km and has a population of 3.339million. Under the jurisdiction of Jiaxing City there are two districts (Nanhu District and Xiuzhou District), three county-level cities (Pinghu City, Haining City and Tongxiang City) and two counties (Jiashan County and Haiyan County).

History

Jiaxing was a place of fish and rice. More than 7,000 years ago, there were inhabitants living on fishery and animal husbandry. It made a great progress in economy during the Sui Dynasty (581-618) due to the construction of the Jiang Nan He, Hangzhou to Zhenjiang section of the Grand Canal. The canal helped Jiaxing to be a bread basket in southeast of China, and a place wealthy in cotton fabric and silk.
 

Attractions

Jiaxing has abundant culture relics and tourism interests. There are beautiful tide, lakes and rivers. To the south of city, there are the revolutionary saint place of South Lake and other places like Xitang Ancient Town of thousands of years that is well preserved as an elegant historic town.

Qiantang river tide, a wonder of Haining; Wu Zhen is crowned as one of the six ancient towns south of the Yangtze River with a history of more than one thousand years, also the birth place of Maodun.
 

Transportation

By air: There are complete and sophisticated types of planes including the Boeing-737, CRJ-200, CRJ-700, Chellenger-604 etcetera in the Jiaxing International Airport. With over 100 routes and more than 600 flights arranged in a week, passengers can fly to the big domestic cities such as Shanghai, Beijing and Shenzhen easily.

By train: Situated at the juncture of the Hangzhou-Shanghai Railway, Jiaxing is served by two raolway stations: Jiaxing Railway Station and Jiaxing South Railway Station.

By bus: Jiaxing has two long-distance bus stations: Jiaxing North Bus Station and Jiaxing Transportation Center.
 

Weather

Belonging to the subtropical monsoon climate, Jiaxing is abundant in rainfall and sunshine with wet spring, torrid summer, dry autumn and cold winter. It has an annual average temperature of nearly 16 C (61 F), and rainy muggy days in summer are much fewer than dry chilly days in winter. Spring and autumn are the beat time to Jiaxing for the tourist and folk festivals.
 

Food and Restaurant

Jiaxing food specializes in the Jiangnan dishes which combines Hangbang Cuisine with Hu Cuisine. There are a series of delicacies, such as Nanhu Crab, Wufangzhai Zongzi (rice dumplings), Wenhujiangya (sauce duck) and so on. All these can be found in the Zhongshan Lu where locates the snack street.

Tips for travel

1. Jiaxing South Yangtze River Culture Festival is celebrated in South Lake during October to November.

2. If you want to visit the Qiantang tide, the sixth day of the eighth lunar month is the best time.
