Lake Yamdrok is the largest inland lake on the northern slope of Himalaya and is one of the holy lakes in Tibet.

Covering an area of 678 square kilometers, Lake Yamdrok, a holy lake in Tibet, is 4,441 meters above the sea level and lies between Nagarze County and Gyangtze, 70 kilometers away from the southwest of Lhasa. The water in the lake is blue and clam. The aquatic plants are very rich along the river bank which is a fertile highland ranch. Because of its unique inland lake’s beauty, Lake Yamdrok is highly spoken among the people.

Reportedly, the devout Buddhists go around the lake every year. Riding takes about one month, which is equal to their pilgrimages to Lhasa. What they do can get blesses of the God to them. However, the main reason for being known as the holy lake is that it can help people to find the Dalai Lama’s reincarnation. After the death of Dalai, the monks responsible for this task let the wizard point out the direction. Then chant scripture near the Lake Yamdrok. The people preside the ceremony can see the reincarnation’s direction more specifically.

Noijin Kangsang Peak

Noijin Kangsang Peak near Lake Yamdrok is the main peak of Lhagoi Kangri Mountain which is 360 kilometers and separates the Brahmaputra and Lake Yamdrok. Noijin Kangsang Peak, one of the four snow peaks, is 7,206 meters above the sea level. It is majestic and towering. The glaciers develop between the gullies. It is a good place to see the beauty of glacier.

Lake Yamdrok

The depth of the water is general between 20 to 40 meters and the maximum depth is 59 meters. More than 21 small islands with various migratory birds distribute in the lake with big ones accommodating five or six families and small ones only covering an area of 100 meters. The scene that tens of thousands of birds fly above the lake is very attractive and spectacular. The bifurcations of Lake Yamdrok are like the coral branches. A lot of planktons are in the lake. Every summer, the fishes will swim from deep water to shallow water to forage and spawn, which becomes the paradise for fishes. The largest artificial fish farm is here. Around the lake, there are a lot of wild animal.
