Badong is a county in Enshi Autonomous Prefecture of Tujia and Miao Nationalities located in the extreme west of Hubei province. With Wu Gorge in the west and the Yangtze River flowing through, it occupies an area of 3,219 km² and has a population of 483,408 composed of Tujia, Miao and Han peoples.
History
'Ba' is an ancient tribe in today’s eastern Sichuan and Western Hubei. The area was governed by this tribe before Han Dynasty and played an important role between the communication between ancient Hubei and Sichuan areas. The county was administrated by different prefecture in successive dynasties according to their administrative divisions.
Attractions
Shennong Stream is the most famous attractions in Badong. With elegant landscape, it is well-known throughout the world for a stop on the Yangtze River Cruise. Visitors can experience the culture of boat tracker here.
Gezi River Stone Forest, named Small Guilin on Three Gorges, has Karst landform with strange stones of various shapes. Qiufeng Pavilion has a history of over 1,000 years. From here, one can get a great view of magnificent mountains and Yangtze River. Shennongjia Nature Reserve is also a must see when travel to Badong.
Transportation
The most convenient way to reach Badong is taking a Yangtze river boat due to the difficult terrain and the road conditions in the county. Badong harbor serves boats up and down between Yichang and Chongqing.
Badong Railway Station is located in Yesanguan Town. There are trains to Enshi, Chongqing, Chengdu, Yichang and Wuhan as well as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.
The long distance bus station at Jintang Road has daily buses to Chongqing, Wuhan, Yichang, Jingmen, Shennongjia, Enshi as well as buses to Shenzhen, Shanghai, Xiamen, Ningbo and Wenzhou every other day.
Weather and Climate
Badong has a subtropical mountain climate with humid and moderate weather all year round. The annual average temperature is around 17.4��-7.8��(63.3°F -46°F). It is usually foggy and rainy due to the mountainous terrain. July and August is sultry and early summer is cool.
