Lhasa Transportation

The most convenient way to get to Lhasa is by air due to its high altitude. Lhasa is easily accessed by train with the opening of Qinghai–Tibet Railway. Tourists can also get to Lhasa by bus and one can get around the city by mini buses, taxies or bicycles. Pedicab is the most famous vehicle in Lhasa and most attractions in the city can be walked to.

Lhasa is a small city but it is convenient to get around by taxi. There are a lot taxis and the fare within the city is CNY10 regardless of the distance. You need to negotiate a fare with the driver beforehand for longer trips. For instance, it costs CNY20 to the Drepung Monastery and CNY120 - 200 to the airport.

 Lhasa Gonggar Airport


It is about 65 km south of Lhasa city. It connects Lhasa with most cities in China such as Chengdu, Beijing, Xian, Chongqing and Xining. Tourists usually take a flight from Chengdu as there are about 20 flights per week to Lhasa Gonggar Airport.
 

 How to get to the airport


It takes about an hour and costs approximately CNY 35 by shuttle bus. Buses from Tsetang or Shigatse to Lhasa also stop at the airport and the cost is CNY20 – 30. Taking a taxi costs CNY120 – 200 and you can share it equally with other person.

 Mini Bus


Minibus is the cheapest way to get around in the city. Minibuses go to areas such as Norbulingka, Sera Monastery, Drepung Monastery and other nearby sites. Travelers can easily find minibuses in front of Jokhang Temple and the fare is CNY2 per person.
 

 Long Distance Bus


The Long Distance Bus Station is at the junction of Minzu Road and Jinzhuzhong Road. There are buses to Bayi, Chamdo, Gyangtze, Zhangmu and Shigatse, Golmud.

Best Time to Visit

Qinghai-Tibet Railway makes it more convenient to get to Lhasa. The railway station is 20 km southwest of the Potala Palace and there are trains from/to Beijing (48 hours), Xi'an (36 hours), Chongqing (47 hours), Chengdu (48 hours), Lanzhou (26 hours) and Xining (25 hours).

Bicycle

Many hostels offer bicycle rental service and the cost is about CNY20-40 per day.

Pedicabs are an interesting sight in Lhasa city and it is a good way to enjoy the city. Just wave your hands and the pedicab will stop. The cost is usually CNY3-8 and you should negotiate with the driver before getting on.
