Yichang has since ancient times been a crucial link along the river trading line between Wuhan, Chengdu and Chongqing, thus it gets the names "Gateway to the Three Gorges", and "The neck of Sichuan and Hubei." Yichang is known for its stunning views of Xiling Gorge and a number of other sights along the Yangtze River. Yichang City is located in the western end of China's Hubei Province, at the divide of the middle and upper reaches of the Yangtze River. Today, Yichang remains a brisk river port, controlling all river access to Chongqing City to the southwest. Its western end is covered in forest and spiked with mountains, but the plains to its east and south are flat and fertile. The city covers a total of 21,084 square kilometers and has a population of 3.89 million.

History

It is an ancient city and its history can be traced back to 4,000 years. During what is known as its Spring and Autumn Periods (770 BC - 476 BC), Yichang was regarded as a city of great strategic importance. Many famous battles took place here, such as the Changbanpo Battle and the Yiling Battle during the Three Kingdoms Period (220 - 280). Relics of these battles can still be found in the area. Another interesting aspect of Yichang is that several eminent persons were born here in ancient times, such as the concubine Wang Zhaojun during the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC - 24 AD) and the patriotic poet Qu Yuan in the Warring States Period (476 BC - 221 BC).

Yichang is known for its stunning views of Xiling Gorge and a number of other sights along the Yangtze River. Other sites for tourism are Chinese Sturgeon Museum, Gezhouba Water Conservancy Project, Three Gorges Dam Project, Xiling Gorge and Zigui.

Economy

Yichang is an important shipping and trading port for goods moving through the east of Sichuan Province and into the northwest of Hubei Province. It is also an important link in the government's gradual western urbanization project known as the Western Development Project, which aims to extend the benefits of modernization so well enjoyed in eastern China into the western regions of Tibet, Yunnan and Xinjiang.

Transportation

Located in the middle of China, Yichang is the transportation center which connects the eastern and the western parts of China. Sanxia Airport is not far from the city center and there are more than ten domestic airlines with services to the major cities of China, including Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai and Xian. In addition, Yichang Port, Yichang Railway Station and Yichang Bus Station offer visitors convenient ways of traveling to and from other parts of the country.

Natuinalities

Yichang is rich in ethnic minority culture. Altogether Yichang has 31 ethnic groups. The largest ethnic minority group is the Tujia. They make up 9.5 percent of the city's population. The Tujia people are particularly good at traditional ensembles of Chinese wind and percussion instruments. Many different ethnic dances and kinds of music can be found in the city. There are Tiaopi Dances, Dihuagu Dances, and Huaguzi Dances.

    Yichang is in a sub-tropical monsoon zone with four distinct seasons. It enjoys abundant sunshine and rainfall, and the average annual temperature is around 15C (59F).

    June and July are the hottest months as well as the rainy season.
