Located at the foot of the southeastern slopes of Huanggang Mountain, the main peak of the Wuyi Mountains, Wuyishan City sits 400 meters above sea level on hills of red gravel rock. The highest peak exceeds 700 m, With an area of 60 sq km, Wuyishan City lies between altitudes 27' 35'-27' 3'N, and longitudes 117' 55'-118' 01'E. The bluish-green water and reddish hills are characteristics entirely unique to the region. The physiognomy of Wuyishan is typical Danxia, with the vivid, elegantly shaped peaks of the Wuyi mountains standing out against the sky.

Climate

Located close to the tropic of Cancer, Wuyishan City has a sub-tropical, humid monsoon climate. The high mountains to the northwest of the city keep off cold air from the north in winter, and fence in warm and humid air currents from the ocean in spring and summer. Hence, the city has a warm, fresh and cool climate, with an average annual temperature of 17.7C (63.86F).July is the hottest month of the year, when the average temperature is about 27'C. January is the coldest month, when the average temperature is about 8C (46.4F). The city is suitable for tourism all the year round. Wuyishan City gets quite a bit of rainfall, with an annual mean of around 1,900 mm, concentrated in spring and summer. It has 150-160 rainy days and about 110 foggy days a year.

History

Wuyishan Mountain is a famous cultural mountain with a long history. It has been held in great esteem since the Qin Dynasty, and in the Tang Dynasty (618-907), it was named a famous mountain by the Court. It was reputed to be the location of the"No.16 Cavern" by the Taoists, and of the "Cavern of Idealist Philosophy in the South" in the Song Dynasty (960-1279). Zhu Xi, the scholar who founded Neo-Confucianism during the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279), installed himself in the "Wuyi Best Cottage" here, where he gathered his disciples, gave lectures and wrote books, thus turning it into a center of cultural and academic activity. Many men of letters, such as Li Shangyin, Xin Qiji, Liu Yong, Xu Xiake and Qi Jiguang toured Wuyi Mountains, leaving behind their memories of the area in over 2,000 immortal essays and poems.

Wuyi Mountain has a number of unique historical sites, such as the boat-shaped coffins of the Shang (16th-11th century B.C.) and Western Zhou (11th century -771B.C.) dynasties, the ruins of an ancient city of the Han Dynasty, the ruins of the Ziyang Academy, the ruins of the 10,000 Year Palace, Cheng Village the Xiamei Building Complex of the Qin Dynasty, the Yongle Buddhist Temple, the Taoyuandong Taoist Temple, the Zhizhi Nunnery, Yuqing Bridge as well as numberless ancient cliff carvings. There are a wealth of folk tales and poems about the mountain and its residents; the scholar Cai Shangsi once wrote:"Eastern Zhou gave birth to Confucius, and Southern Song to Zhu Xi." The heart of China's ancient culture beats here, in the Tai and Wuyi Mountains.

Scenic Spots

Wuyishan City is the only tourism city named after the famous mountain in Fujian Province. It is rich in tourism resources, with unique scenic spots and many historical sites. It has a state key scenic area, key nature reserve, key tourist resort, a first-class airport, and the ruins of the ancient Han Dynasty city of Chengcun, whose historical monuments and cultural relics are protected by the state. Thanks to its unique geographical location, the Chinese Government has approved the establishment of broad-scale examination bodies there, which regulate customs and border, commodity, animal, plant and hygiene supervision.. With the approval of the General Administration of Customs, the Wuyishan Bonded Warehouse Zone has been set up here.

Yunu (Jade Girl) Peak stands by the Second Bend of the Jiuqu (Nine Bends) Stream--the Wuyishan Area of Scenic Spots and Historical Sites. More than 100m high, the summit of the peak is full of colorful flowers, like girl's hair decorated with wild flowers. The cliff is elegant and smooth, like a piece of carved jade. If you look at the peak while floating on a bamboo raft, the Yunu Peak is just like a beautiful young girl. "A remarkable peak decorated with flowers stands by a river, just like a pure and pretty girl"--a true portrayal of the charming Yunu Peak. The peak is not only of the symbol of Wuyishan's tourist industry, but is also the tourist logo of Fujian Province.

Economy

Today in Wuyishan, highway, railway, ocean shipping and communication systems are all advanced and convenient; the provincial-level tourist economic development zone is beginning to take shape; tourists and business people from home and abroad are free to come and go, goods can be imported or exported directly within a duty-free processing storage zone. The Wuyishan Municipal Traffic Committee and the Government are now working on developing the city through tourism, environmental protection, science and education, proper use of resources, and the development of tea, bamboo and other forest products. Bamboo arts and crafts are highly attractive to tourists, and some are sold abroad. Wuyi rock tea, the area's top export, boasts a long history and a unique flavor, enjoying high reputation both at home and abroad. "Rougui" tea has been a gold medal winner for many years running, while Dahongpao, the king of teas, is unquestionably one of the finest teas in the world. Prospects for development are many, varied and exciting, and the future is only getting brighter.
