Pingyao History
Merchants Tradition in Ancient Shanxi
Pingyao was the birthplace of the Jin Businessmen, who were one of the two famous Chinese business groups during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties. Owing to this, the first Chinese exchange shop was opened in Pingyao. Then, for the next hundred years, Pingyao was home to almost all of the large exchange shops in China.
In a sense, Pingyao was to China during the eighteenth century what Wall Street is to the US, which not only helped promote the economic development of Shanxi, but also left us with a magnificent old city and a series of grand residences.
Modern City
Today, Pingyao's residential area and commercial buildings have sprung up around the Old City. Department stores, super markets, hotels, and other entertainment venues show this ancient county's renewed vitality.

Pingyao offers traditional northern China cuisine and specializes in various noodle dishes and pastries.

Lacquerware - Lacquerware is the local specialty with lacquer jewelry boxes. Pingyao's Tuiguang Lacquerware (Polished Lacquerware) is famous for its fine hand polished finish.
Cloth Shoes - The handmade cloth shoes in Pingyao are commonly seen, quite absorbent and ventilate the feet. Kinds of cloth shoes are available: Some are in simple black, some embroidered and some are of damask cloth.

Since Pingyao is not far away from Taiyuan, Taiyuan City can be taken as a transfer station for your trip to other cities around China.
Railway - Pingyao is well-connected by trains. Trains to and from cities like Beijing, Chengdu, Xian, Chongqing and Taiyuan are available in Pingyao Railway Station.
Bus - Pingyao Long-distance Bus Station is located not far from the southwest of Pingyao Railway Station. Buses here mainly head for Taiyuan City and the counties around Pingyao County.

Pingyao is situated on the Loess Plateau and is windy and dusty. So you had better not dress in light color. Besides, the air is dry and you should take good care of your skin, and drink more water, or else your lips will be chapped.

What should I need to note when eating in Pingyao?
The soil of Pingyao is alkaline, so we strongly recommend you to drink a spoon of local mature vinegar before your three meals a day because the local vinegar could reduce the alkalescence and prevent intestinal disease.
