Jiaxing is located in the southeastern part of China's coastline and in the center of Yangtze River Delta. It abuts on Shanghai to the east, Suzhou to the north, Hangzhou to the west and Hangzhou Bay to the south. It covers a land area of 3,915 sq km and has a population of 3.339million. Under the jurisdiction of Jiaxing City there are two districts (Nanhu District and Xiuzhou District), three county-level cities (Pinghu City, Haining City and Tongxiang City) and two counties (Jiashan County and Haiyan County).
Jiaxing has a long history and a brilliant culture. It is the cradle of the culture in south of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. As early as 6,000 or 7,000 years ago, the ancestors bred the Majiabang Civilization, which is recognized as the representative of the culture of the Taihu Trainage Area in early Neolithic Age and as one of the origins of ancient civilization of Chinese nation. In history Jiaxing celebrities came forth in large numbers. Merely in modern and contemporary times, such accomplished masters came to the fore as Mao Dun (a modern literature master), Wang Guowei (a master of Chinese studies), Xu Zhimo (a famous poet of Crescent Moon School), Feng Zikai and Zhang Leping (a famous caricaturists), Chen Xingsheng (a famous mathematician ) , Jin Yong (a kung fu novelist).
Jiaxing has always been a rich and prosperous land and is long known as "land of fish and rice" and "place of silk and satin." Jiaxing is a national commodity grain base and one of Zhejiang's important production bases for farm and sideline products. Besides, Jiaxing has a sound base of industry. Jiaxing boasts of smooth telecommunications facilities and rich energy resources. The "East China Power Base" has taken shape. In the area, there is the first nuclear power station designed by China, Qiushan Nuclear Power Plant, whose installed capacity of nuclear power will reach 3 million kilowatts at the beginning of the next century.
Jiaxing has abundant culture relics and tourism interests. There are beautiful tide, lakes and rivers. To the south of city, there are the revolutionary saint place of South Lake and other places like Xitang-living ancient town of thousands of years; 9 dragon sea shore of the south east coast of Pinghu, which is called the .Oriental Hawaii; south and north lake of Haiyan, which is famous for a truly water and mountain; Qiantang river tide, a wonder of Haining; Wu Zhen, the birth place of Maodun in Tongxiang.
