Hengyang, known as the "gateway to Hunan," is an important strategic point in southern Hunan. Located at the confluence of the Leishui, Zhengshui, and Xiangjiang rivers and at the Junction of the Beijing-Guangzhou and Xiangtan-Guilin railways, it is an entrepot both of land and water transportation in south Hunan. Hengyang is located in the central and southern Hunan province, and middle reaches of Xiangjiang River, south of Mt. Hengshan.

Economy
It is the leading transportation center of Hunan, linking water, rail, and highway routes. Manufactures include chemicals, agricultural and mining equipment, textiles, paper, and processed foods. Lead, zinc, coal, and tin mines are nearby.
History
Yang in Chinese means south of a mountain. Hengyang got its name from the fact that it is located to the south of Hengshan Mountain. It was the most important transport pivot and political, economic and cultural center of southern Hunan. Its former name was Hengzhou (Hengchow). Hengyang is rich in historical relics and beautiful natural scenery. The memorial temple to Marquis Cai Yong of the Han Dynasty, the Shigu (stone drum) Academy of Classical Learning and the tablet to the legendary Emperor Yu have attracted visitors for thousands of years. Mount Heng, one of the "five sacred mountains" of China, is famous for its magnificent landscape and ancient temples.
Secnic Spots
Mt Hengshan, as one of the five sacred mountains in China, Mt Hengshan, different with Mt Hengshan in Shanxi Province, is esteemed as Nan Yue (South Mountain). The mountain range runs 150 km form Hengyang to Changsha, having a cluster of 72 peaks. The summit, Zhurong Feng, rises 1290 metres high and is the vantage to watch sunrise and sea of clouds. The mountain is a nice summer getaway and the only place in south China to watch snow in winter. Nan Yue Temple, lying at the foot of the mountain, is one of the best preserved temples in South China. Grand religious rituals are held annually in the middle of August.
Nanyue Grand Temple ,located on Beijie Street of Nanyue Town, it covers an area of more than 9,800 square meters. Imitating the style of the Forbidden City in Beijing, it is divided into nine rows. The Temple faces the south and its turrets stand tall. Clear brooks flow around the red walls. Eight Taoist temples are situated in the eastern part and eight Buddhist temples in the western part of the Temple, showing the connection between the two kinds of religions. The elaborate building, complete structures and careful layout are hard to find in other ancient buildings in China.
Zhu Rong Peak is 1,290 meters high, the tallest one in Nanyue district. It is named after a person Zhu Rong. On the top is the Zhu Rong Hall, the Nantianmen (South Gate Heaven) and the Wangyuetai (Platform to watch the moon). Nearby are the Xianren Bridge, the Luohan Cave, the Sheshen Rock and the Huixian Bridge.
