Zhenyuan Ancient Town owns a 2000-year long history. The State Council designated it as the Famous National Historic Cultural Town in 1986. For centuries, Zhenyuan ancient town nestles on the eastern part of Guizhou province. It has 22 minority nationalities, such as Dong people, Miao people. These minority nationalities left huge folk custom and rich culture. Its long history endows the town with colorful and generous cultural relics, making it much like a historic garden.

The intoxicating sights

The town covers only an area of 3.1 square kilometers, but greets you with more than 160 scenic spots including caves, palaces, pavilions, temples and rivers with their unique architecture, exquisite engravings and marvelous natural landscape. Among them are famous Wuyang River Scenic Area and elegant ancient complex in Black Dragon Cave - beckoning sights not to be missed by any visitor to eastern Guizhou.

The long history of "Oriental Venice"

Located at the edge of Yunnan-Guizhou plateau, Zhenyuan is sheltered by the mountains. It is a land-and-water transportation center since early times. In 202 B.C., the town became a county instituted by Han Gaozu, Emperor Liu Bang, and then in 1956 - the capital of southeast Guizhou Autonomous Prefecture. Cut through by the Wuyang River, the town is divided into two parts: south "Wei City" and north "Fu City," which forms a water town. Hence it is well-reputed as the "Oriental Venice."

The colorful nationality culture

With sub-tropical humid climate, annual temperature in Zhenyuan averages 16.4 degree with four distinct seasons. It is therefore an ideal tourist destination all year round. The famous old town not only has long history, but also it possesses specific nationality culture. Here you have a chance to taste the rich culture and appreciate the beautiful scenery. The stone streets take the people remote ancient dynasty instead of the modern civilization. Many minority nationality people's houses look like to tell the old touching stories. The exciting festival atmosphere

The Dragon Boat Festival, occurring on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese calendar, is the most ceremonious celebration in Zhenyuan ancient town. The focus of the celebrations includes eating Zongzi, made of glutinous rice stuffed with different fillings and wrapped in bamboo leaves, drinking realgar wine, and racing dragon boats. When this day approaching, the whole town will bathe in a joyous mood of the festival, so will you.

    Guiyang has a pleasant moist subtropical climate with ample rainfall. It is neither hot in summer nor too chilly in winter. Guiyang is lucky as much as it does not suffer sandstorms and the pleasant climate makes it a cozy city in which to live.

    Liu Yue Liu literarily means a date, June 6. Actually it is a festival held on the sixth day of the sixth Chinese lunar month, hence the name. This festival is an important day for Buyi people to worship the cook's god and the mountain god.

    Si Yue Ba is held annually on the eighth day of the lunar month. On this day, large numbers of Miao people put on their beautiful costumes and congregate in the center area of Guiyang City to celebrate this great festival by playing the Lusheng and flute, singing antiphonal songs and dancing.

    Di Xi is a form of local drama. It is held on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month at Huaxi by Buyi People and other minority groups. The performers put on masks and costumes and engage in dancing and singing. Generally the performance tells a story of a battle or the loyalty between friends of ancient times


  • Does Guizhou have a lot of ethnic groups there?

    Guizhou is a multi-region province. Apart from Han, there are about 17 other ethic groups that live here, such as Miao, Buyi, Dong, Yi, Shui, Hui, Zhuang, Yao, Man, Bai, Mongolia, Qiang and Tu.

    We suggest that you 'do as the romans do' when you go to visit Guizhou, because there are a lot of customs and taboos in the ethnic groups. Also respect their tradition to avoid conflict.


  • Some customs about the Miaos

    The Miaos usually keep open doors and are fond of drinking. Most of them can make home-made alcohol. Shaojiu is the most common alcohol. During a meal, the host might want his guest to drink some alcohol, if they refuse to drink, the host will not be happy. If you really can't drink, then please tell the host before the meal starts.


  • Some warnings about hotels

    Hotels in small towns such as Rongjiang and Congjiang are of significantly lower standard. Heating is sometimes not available and western style toilets usually unavailable.


  • Electricity

    The electricity used in China is 220 volt AC. Many middle and high-class hotel wash rooms have transformer plugs for electric shavers and hair dryers, but it is better to be prepared with an adapter plug.
