Shopping Heaven on Xujiahui Street Overview & Map Weather Transportation Information
Shanghai is hailed as the "Shopping Paradise" and "Oriental Paris." So if you come to Shanghai, shopping should not be missed any more than its other charming attractions. Providing the very best of shopping has become an indispensable part of Shanghai's tourism industry.
Four Streets and Four Cities in Shanghai
Shopping areas in Shanghai are clearly divided into "Four Streets and Four Cities." Nanjing Road, one of the four streets, enjoys the reputation of No.1 Commercial Street in China. Huaihai Road, no less famous than Nanjing Road, is celebrated for its elegance. North Sichuan Road offers good inexpensive merchandise and is always the first choice of ordinary people. Food and tourism are well provided for on Middle Tibet Road. Yuyuan Shopping City, Xujiahui Shopping City, New Shanghai Shopping City and Jiali Sleepless City are the bustling "Four Cities" in Shanghai.
The name fo Xujiahui
Xujiahui literally means "Xu's junction." The "Xu family" actually refers to the family of Xu Guangqi (1562 - 1633), China's most notable Catholic convert, agricultural scientist, astronomer, and mathematician in the Ming Dynasty.
Oriental manhattan - Xujiahui
Xujiahui, which lies in the southwestern section of central Shanghai, is one of the most successful and modern commercial centers. Whereas Nanjing Road has a long history, Xujiahui is focusing on the future with two major computer markets and a number of large department stores and shopping centers. In just ten years, Xujiahui has become one of the four biggest shopping destinations in the city of Shanghai. Many people enjoy shopping at Xujiahui because of the number of modern and fashionable shopping malls all within walking distance from each other.
Modern Xujiahui
Xujiahui is a fast growing commerce hub in between the Shanghai Stadium and Hengshan Road. You'll find all of the "it" brands in the shopping centers circumspread in Xujiahui, Armani, Diesel, Versace, Adidas and many more. There are lots of banks such as ICBC Bank, BANK of China, CITIC Bank, Merchants Bank, Agricultural, and a few City Bank ATMs. The new Grand Gateway towers that house Multinationals like Yum, Microsoft, Softbank, IBM, Lenovo, and the Swatch Group are giving the Xujiahui skyline a unique appearance.
What to purchase
Everything from cosmetics to cars to cucumbers is available within five minutes, but the type of product that Xujiahui is most famous for is electronics. It is one of the biggest places for people to get electronic equipment, from cameras to PSPs to XBoxes and modchips for those XBoxes and other game consoles as well.
If you're looking for anything electronic, this is the place to start. Pacific Digital Plaza Phase 2 is the place to start, conveniently connected to exit number 10 of the Metro station. There are more electronics markets nearby, such as Pacific Digital Plaza Phase 1 and Buynow. Popular game consoles such as Wii, PS3, and Xbox360 are abundantly available as are laptops, MP3 players, memory cards, and computer accessories. The metro station exits at the intersection of 5 roads. There's at least one shopping mall on each of the 5 corners. Grand Gateway is the most upscale of them, and also the best-air conditioned in the summertime. The 5th and 6th floors of Grand Gateway offer a good selection of restaurants.
What to taste
Apart from various merchandise, countless restaurants and Starbucks attract you to have a try.
- *Uighur Restaurant
Uighur Restaurant claims to be the "original" Xinjiang cuisine restaurant in the city, and probably the best-known. The typical main dishes are moderately spicy preparations of lamb, but the menu also features some rather adventurous items like camel feet, sheep's eyeballs, and a bull's you-know-what. Also music and dance shows with the obligatory audience participation. - The Foodrepublic
Also, the basement of MetroCity has a Foodrepublic, a food court of sorts housing many different restaurants including a Burger King. They don't accept cash (Most of them- the restaurants that have their own seating area separate take both cash and cards), so you'll have to add money to (and put down a deposit for) a stored-value card specific to the other Foodrepublics. You can see plastic models of all the dishes before you order them, though, so you'll have a decent idea of what you're getting ahead of time. Expect copious MSG, but delicious food.
Department stores
Xujiahui has a wide range of prices. Each of the giant department stores is positioned for certain markets. Examples include: the Pacific Department Store, the Oriental Department Store, and Huijin Department Store all offer up-scale and relatively expensive shopping with many international brands and No. 6 Department Store (near the Pacific) is a medium range choice in the area. Grand Gateway Plaza, Pacific Digital Plaza, Metro City and Digital Malls are worth visiting.
How to get there
Xujiahui is the popular commercial area of Shanghai's Xuhui district. The main Xujiahui shopping district is centered around the intersection of the streets Hongqiao Road, Huashan Road, Zhaojiabang Road and North Caoxi Road.
Metro Line 1 runs under Xujiahui, and Xujiahui Station is one of the biggest metro stations in Shanghai. The station connects most, if not all, big shopping malls in the Xujiahui commercial circle and contains an underground market all the way along the station from Hongqiao Road to Nandan Road.
Sightseeing
The Xujiahui Shopping City also provides some places for tourists to enjoy after bustling shopping amongst prosperous department stores.
-
Xujiahui Park
Xujiahui Park was completed in 2002, adding unique glamour to this commercial district of downtown Shanghai. The Shanghai Conservatory of Music - located to the park - often stages free performances during the Spring and Autumn months in the park, as these are the times when weather in Shanghai is the best. -
Xujiahui Cathedral (St Ignatius Cathedral)
The Xujiahui Cathedral is the largest Catholic Church in Shanghai with a long history. It has a high status among the Chinese adherents. Established in 1904, it follows a typical Gothic style in middle ages. The building is narrow. There are two Gothic towers of 60 meters high, and the principal part of the church is at the center.
