Xianyang Museum, which was originally a Confucian temple, was reconstructed and opens in the public in 1962. Located in Xianyang City of Shaanxi Province, the Xianyang Museum is a local history museum. The museum features nine exhibition halls and a stele corridor. It houses 15,000 or more cultural relics, out of which 4,000 are on display.

Capital of Qin Dynasty-Xianyang

Xianyang City is 28 kilometers away from Xi'an. It was the capital of the famous Qin Dynasty (221 B.C. - 206 B.C.) in Chinese history. The first Qin Emperor gained power in Xianyang and established the first centralized feudal multinational state. After the unification of the six kingdoms, the whole populace was lorded to build "imperial chariot roads." These wide roads were used for horses and chariots.

Full of cultural & historical relics

The capital of Qin Dynasty was a vital link of communication to the northwest part of China during the Han Dynasty, also the imperial cemetery during the Western Han period (206 B.C. - 25 A.D.). Of the eleven emperors of this period, nine were buried here. Near the imperial mausoleums, there are also tombs of many imperial kinsmen and civil and military officials. Therefore, Xianyang is known for its wealth of cultural and historical relics from both the Qin and the Han dynasties, from above and below the ground.

What are on display?

Xianyang Museum focuses its exhibition on the historical relics of the Qin and the Han dynasties, 20 of which are of the national first class. It consists of nine showrooms and a stele corridor.

• No.1, 2 and 3 showrooms exhibit cultural relics such as copper and golden coins, jade, pottery and even building materials of the Qin Dynasty.
  

• Showroom No. 4 displays some calligraphy and paintings of modern celebrities.
  

• The most striking cultural relics in Xiangyang Museum, the Han Dynasty Terra-cotta Soldiers, which are as grand as the Qin Terracotta Warriors and Horses, are well preserved in showroom No. 5 and 6. The 3,000 terra-cotta soldiers were excavated in Xianyang, 1965. The figures are colorful and vivid, showing the impressive manner of the royal soldiers of Han Dynasty.
  

• Showroom No. 7, 8 and 9 mainly display religious relics. A copper statues of Sitting Buddha made in the Ming Dynasty is the largest one of its kind.
  

• In addition, the newly opened Stele Corridor exhibits hundreds of ancient steles covered by marvelous calligraphy and carvings.

  Xi'an is in a warm temperate zone, and has a continental monsoon climate with four distinct seasons; Xi'an is hot and wet in summer, dry and seldom snowy in winter and is prone to extended spells of rain in spring and autumn.

  The temperature during spring (March to May) increases rapidly, but is prone to fluctuation. The average temperature in March is 7.9 centigrade, rising to 14.1 centigrade in April and 19.4 centigrade in May.

  Summer in Xi'an (June to August) becomes both hot and humid, with the highest average temperature being 32 centigrade and the maximum temperature of ten above 40 centigrade.

  Xi'an also experiences a fair amount of precipitation during autumn, (September to November). The early autumn period is cool and can be overcast, late autumn is usually fine.

  Winter (December to February) is dry and cold with a little snow. The coldest month is January, with an average temperature of 0 Centigrade.
