Wuhou Ci
Situated in the south suburb of Chengdu, Wuhou Memorial Temple covers an area of 3.7 hectares. It is dedicated to the memory of both Liu Bei (161 - 223), Emperor of the Kingdom of Shu in the Three Kingdoms period (220 - 280), and Zhuge Liang (181 - 234), Prime Minister of the Kingdom.
After the Han Dynasty collapsed in the early 3rd century, the state was divided into three kingdoms, Wei, Shu, and Wu. Competing to reunify the country, the three were locked in war, leaving behind many famous historical remains and tales of heroism.
Zhuge Liang acted as military advisor to Liu Bei and helped him found the Shu Kingdom, which ruled today's Sichuan and neighboring provinces. During his tenure as prime minister, the kingdom enjoyed political stability and economic prosperity, and the local people lived a peaceful life.
Today Zhuge Liang is considered the personification of wisdom, and enjoys great prestige and widespread admiration. His great personality, his dedicated service to others, and his outstanding intelligence place Zhuge Liang above some emperors, generals, and ministers in history.
A visit to the temple illuminates his status with the Chinese people. The temple is so named because Zhuge Liang was conferred with the title of "Wuhou" after his death, a title meaning marquis of war.
The date of its establishment is unclear. The board hung above the gate reads "Han Zhaolie Temple" (Zhaolie was a title given to Liu Bei posthumously). But the temple is commonly called Wuhou Memorial Temple (Zhuge Liang was conferred on the title of Wu Xianghou after his death). The current temple was rebuilt in 1672. Surrounded by old cypresses and classical red walls, the temple evokes nostalgia.
The beauty of Wuhou Memorial Temple is enhanced by old cypress trees and classical red walls surrounding it on all sides. The main body of the temple is divided into five sections, the Gate, the second Gate, the Hall of Liu Bei, the corridor, and the Hall of Zhuge Liang, all of which run south to north. Inside, clay sculptures of Shu Emperor and ministers stand together, making them a special feature.
The memorial temple, dignified and simple in style, houses 47 statues of Liu Bei, Zhuge Liang and other civil officials and senior generals of the Kingdom.
The most valuable cultural relic within the temple is the huge Triple-Success Stele set up in 809. The three successes are: an article written by Pei Du, a famous minister of the Tang Dynasty who served four emperors in succession, calligraphy by Liu Gongquan, one of the most brilliant calligraphers in Chinese history, and a statement about the morality and achievements of Zhuge Liang.
A visit to Wuhou Memorial Temple will enlighten us on the amazing personality of Zhuge Liang. The temple highlights his charming personality, his dedicated service to the people as well as his remarkable intelligence.
