West Street Overview & Map Weather Transportation Information
West Street is the oldest street in Yangshuo with a history of more than 1,400 years. Situated at the center of Yangshuo County, West Street has become a window of eastern and western culture and the biggest "foreign language center" in China. West Street is the most prosperous district in Yangshuo, and, each year, approximately 100,000 foreigners come here on their travels or to attend advanced studies. Visitors are attracted to West Street by its unique mix of cultures.
A glimpse of the West Street
West Street is 517 meters (1,696 feet) long and 8 meters (26 feet) wide, meandering in an "S" along its length. Being completely paved with marble it is a typical example of a southern China street. It is greatly admired by foreigners for its simple style and courtyard-like setting. There is a saying about it that "half is village while the other half is stores."
West Street will drive all of your pressures and burdens away, and give you a calmer view of life. It shows different faces at different times: calm and peaceful in the morning, while trendy and modern in the evening. Traveling to West Street is an experience to be with the landscape, with the people, with the soul, and with yourself.
The strong exotic taste
- Throng of foreign tourists
The West Street is also named "foreigners' street," because you can often see tourists of various nationalities drinking and chatting in threes and fives at almost every street corner.
- English spoke and heard everywhere
English has become the language for daily use. West Street is modern and fashionable; nearly every store has bilingual shop signs. There are more than 20 shops have been opened by foreigners who have settled here. What's more, from the waiters of the hotels and restaurants to the old ladies selling fruits, almost all the people in the street can speak fluent English.
- Harmonious combination of Chinese and foreign culture
A special feature on the street is the communication and interchange of Chinese and foreign cultures. Foreigners can learn Chinese, calligraphy, Tai Chi, cooking, and Chinese chess, while passing international languages and culture to Chinese in bars, shops, or schools. West Street is therefore regarded as a "global village."
- The inter-county marriages
Many foreign tourists usually come to the street after their trips in Guilin and to the Li River, and many are overwhelmed by the area's charm, and then decide to stay. It is reported that the rate of inter-country marriages in Yangshuo is the highest in the nation.
- The Chinese traditional architecture mingled with Western style
Most of the architecture reflects the typical Southern Chinese style of elegance and simplicity. Meanwhile, some of the buildings along the street also follow Western styles. Most of the houses are three-stories or four-stories tall, with bell towers and castle like tops.
Places to relax
Anywhere along the West Street is a good place to start looking for some characteristic cafes: Mimmie Mao's, Anne's Art Cafe, Paris Cafe, Lisa's Cafe, Green Lotus and MC Blues Bar are highly recommended. Menus are in both Chinese and English and the food is as authentic as it can get in China with very reasonable prices.
- Minnie Mao's
Started in 1991, Minnie Mao's is one of the oldest cafes in town. Popular with the local people, Minnie's Cafe, with its hospitality and first-class food, has made a name for itself far and near. Famed for its Minnie soup, Minnie tea, and sweet and sour chicken, the place is often packed. If you are in Yangshuo, you should not miss this excellent food.
- MeiYou Cafe
"Meiyou" means, "we don't have." The reason for this shop sign reflects the promise of the host: "Meiyou warm beer, meiyou lousy food, meiyou rip-offs, meiyou bad service." Just as it promises, the service here is good and the beer and food here is really pleasant.
- Anne's Art Cafe
It is famous for its first-class food qualification, and competitive price. Each dish here can be called an art.
- Paris Cafe
The tinny cafe provides a high-class service, exquisite environment and convenient transportations.

Souvenirs
Visiting West Street, you will be surrounded by an array of traditional folk and amazing international elements. Various shops, craftworks shops, painting and calligraphy stores, backpack shops, and Chinese Kung Fu academies jostle for attention. You may see a multitude of items, from embroidered silk cloth, wax-painted weaving, to tiny shoes worn by women before the liberation of the People's Republic of China in 1949.
Several stores along the West Street make custom silk clothing and musical instruments, though they are a little pricey. A good tip is to head to the larger stores and check out their prices and quality then go to the markets and buy there. West Street is an ancient walking street with Western, simple and sophisticated styles. The street is lined with arts and crafts shops selling trinkets from traditional Chinese clothes to ethnic handicrafts.
