Tiemen Pass Overview & Map Weather Transportation Information
Tiemen Pass, only 8 kilometers (5 miles) north of Korla, lies at the mouth of a 14 kilometer (9 mile) long precipitous gorge. As one of the 26 famous passes, it had strategic importance and was the throat of the ancient Silk Road and the traffic junction between northern Xinjiang and southern Xinjiang.
The origin of the name
It was called Tiemen Pass (also called Iron Pass or Iron Gate Pass) because it was situated on a strategic point and difficult to access. It is listed as one of the 26 famous Passes. Tiemen was at the throat of the Silk Road and the traffic junction between northern Xinjiang and southern Xinjiang.

Traces of military
Nearby, there are still traces of an ancient barracks and military activities. You can imagine the fierce scene of martial activities and are stimulated by once high spirits.
Character engraved on the cliff
Four Chinese characters are inscribed on the cliff beside the pass. The characters describe the steepness of the pass.
Graves with moving love story
Nearby there are two graves in which a couple that died for love and freedom was buried. Tzuohla, Princess of the ancient Yanqi .The viperous premier tried to kill Tayir. While trying to escape, the couple fell down the gorge. The tour guide here may tell you the affecting love story about them.
