千佛山 ‘春看杜鹃,夏望瀑布,秋赏枫叶,冬观冰雪’

Thousand Buddha Mountain is located about 2.5 kilometers southeast of Jinan city at 285 meters above sea level. It occupies an area of 166 hectares.

The mountain was called Mount Lishan in ancient times. According to legend, Yu Shun (one of the sagacious kings in the late primitive society of China) once tilled at its foot so it is called Shun Tilling Mountain too. It was during the reign of the Emperor Kaihuang (581-600 AD) of the Sui Dynasty (581-618 AD) that Buddhism flourished in Shandong Province. Many monasteries were built around Lishan Mountain and numerous Buddhist Images were carved into the rocky cliffs. Hence the place became known as the Thousand Buddha Mountain, which today also embraces Yellowstone Cliff (Huangshi Ya) and Jueshan Mountain in the south and east respectively. The main peak of the mountain is 280m above sea level and there are many impressive rocks, temples, pavilions and terraces dotted around the mountain.

Thousand Buddha Mountain stretches from the east to west with its landscape unfolding like a screen. On the north side of the mountain are three winding and zigzagging paths, flanked by massive pines and cypresses with thick shady leaves that provide shelter from the sun. On the eastern side of the mountain stands the Shandong Revolutionary Martyrs Cemetery for the Revolution of 1911, a key historical site. The main scenic spots include a pagoda-tree of the Tang Dynasty, Xingguo Temple, Nine Spots Terrace, Wenchang Temple, Shun Temple and Stone Buddhist Head.

It should be noted that along with the Buddha scriptures under the Thousand Buddha Wall, at the Qianlou Cave, the Dragon Spring Cave and the Happiest Cave, the wall scriptures inside the cave and the landscapes outside are also worth viewing.

Probably the most renowned temple on Thousand Buddha Mountain is Xingguo Temple, originally built in the Tang Dynasty. Three hundred stone steps stretch half way up the hill to the temple, which is most famous for the stone inscription opposite the front gate. In the courtyard there is a sculpture of Emperor Shun who, according to local legend, ploughed the soil in Jinan as well as invented the writing brush.
