Legend

Ancient Music-playing Terrace

Legend has it that in the Spring and Autumn period (770 B.C. - 476 B.C.), a blind musician named Shi Kuang often played his musical instrument here, hence its name the "Ancient Music-playing Terrace."

Terrace of King Yu

During the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644), Kaifeng was repeatedly flooded when the Yellow River overflowed its banks. To commemorate King Yu, the legendary leader of the Xia Dynasty, who devoted his life to the taming of the flood, the people renamed the place Terrace of King Yu and erected a bronze statue of King Yu on the spot.

What to see

In front of the terrace, a wood archery named "Music Platform" was built, to its south, it was the "Imperial script tower", to its back, and it's the Hall of Great King Yu with the statue of King Yu.

Two courtyards

Eastern yard

There are two courtyards. In the eastern yard, it's the Temple of Three Saints (Sanxiansi). In memory of three famous poets of Tang Dynasty, Li bai, Du Fu, and Gao Shi, who came here to compose poems while drinking wine in the spring of 744.

Western yard

In the western yard, it's the Flood-control Merit Hall for memorizing 37 persons who made their outstanding contribution in flood control in different dynasties.

Imperial script tablets pavilion of Emperor Qianlong

The imperial script tablets pavilion of Emperor Qianlong is erected at the back of the main hall. On the walls of corridor outside the hall are inlaid with stone inscription of Ming and Qing dynasties, with different style of writings, true, cursive script, official script, seal characters, etc, it's really a marvelous view.

Temple fair

Around April there is a Temple Fair in the Temple of King Yu, which is held to commemorate the brave feats of the legendary sage-king Da Yu. The celebration is lively with tightrope walkers edging their way precariously on a wooden beam, boisterous lion dancers and cacophonic Henan and Beijing Opera performances. This festival is held at the Terrace of King Yu.

What to savor

When you are traveling in Kaifeng City, you may try some cuisine which adds glamour to your tour here.

  • Carp with noodles, combining tender fish with thin noodles are a local specialty.
  • Deep fried pork is also worth a try, its golden skin is crispy and crunchy.
  • Tube chicken which gets its odd name because the slices of chicken curl into the shape of a tube after they are cooked is tasty.
