Sun Island Park Overview & Map Weather Transportation Information
The Sun Island Park (Taiyangdao gongyuan) consists of one big island and some smaller islands in the Songhua River, which meander through the north of Harbin, situate on the north bank of Songhua River. It covers an area of 38 square kilometers. Accompanied by the attractive landscapes all over the year, it is a famous scenic spot and a good recuperation place in Chinese north regions.
How it got its name
The name of the Sun Island came from the Manzhou language. The fisherman of Man ethnic call a kind of Fang fish "Taiyi'an" in the Songhua River, after spread for a long time, it became "the Sun Island" in the contents of "The History of Ch'ing Dynasty". In other words near the Sun Island abounds Fang fish. Before 1949, the park used to be a resort for foreign colonies. Presently, many exotic buildings still exist.
Getting around
The scenic area of the Sun Island is composing with 20 scenic spots, such as the water pavilion and loud sky, youth's family, waterside pavilion, fountain and flying waterfall, Sun Mountain and Lotus Lake.

The water pavilion and cloud sky has the character "the park within the park", inside the park there are long corridor, square building, and Sun Lake. Standing on the platform of the building, you can appreciate the landscapes of the island from different angels.
The Youth's Family
The youth's family is also called "the happy village", inside there are children's palace, stadium etc., providing a good entertainment place for children and adults.

Siberian Tiger Park
The Park also contains the Siberian Tiger Park at its northern tip, a good, but sometimes a little gruesome, way to see these rapidly dwindling species. There are apparently over twenty of these beautiful and powerful beasts here, being bred in the hope of being returned to the wild. If you are lucky, you may get to see a feeding session, where little hopping rabbits, live clucking chickens, prancing deer and fatty calves are "captured" and devoured.
Time & Cost
The park can be reached by either a 20 minute bus, minibus ride from the pier (cost around RMB40) or a taxi from the north, over the Song Wan Jeung Gong Road Bridge (Song wan jeung gonglu daqiao). Around RMB30 extra entrance fee is needed for a 30 minute tour.

Opening hours: 8:20a.m.-4:30p.m.
When to come
Along both sandy beaches of the Songhua River, it is the good place for visitors to have a sunbath. In autumn, you can see layers and layers red maples all over the banks and in the water. In winter, the nearby Songhua River is a natural skating rink, here you can have iceboat and also travel riding on the sled.
