Strange Slope is located at the west foot of Mao Mountain in Xinchenzi District, facing the wild field and backing the mountain range. The supernatural Strange Slope is over 80 meters long and about 15 meters wide, with its west part higher than the east part. Since 1990 it was discovered, its fame continues to spread as visitors from home and abroad flock to see this rare sight. Today, Strange Slope lies at the heart of the Strange Slope Scenic Area, which also features a number of other natural attractions, including those which comprise the area's well-known "Three Mysteries" and "Five Great Mountains."

Strange mystery

Magic phenomenon has happened there, when vehicles are on the upslope they will slide automatically but on the downslope they reject to move without driving. This phenomenon is called "Uniqueness of China." It is more wonderful to ride a bike because bikes easily roll upward toward the top but you must pay more efforts to go down the hill.

Why it happens

Its uniqueness lies in its apparent violation of gravity. Experts and scholars have attempted to discern the mystery of the Strange Slope. Commonly scholars attribute this phenomenon to magnetic fields and optical illusions. Owing to the lack of evidence for a solid explanation, Strange Slope is still regarded as a mystery.

What to see

It attracts numerous tourists in and outside the country after it is explored. Centering on the Strange Slope, there gradually forms a scenic area including 20 attractions such as the natural landscapes of the Xiangshan, Wengding, Five Great Mountains (the mountains of Yunmao, Wolong, Guibei, Changkong and Dagu), Three Lakes and One Spring etc. There are altogether 10 cultural scenic spots including ancient Bao'en Temple, and modern adventurous Concentric Rope Bridge and Entertainment Shooting Range.

"Three Mysteries"

Xiangshan, Wongding, together with Strange Slope are "Three Mysteries."

Xiangshan is located on a hillside 100 meters (328 feet) away from the Strange Slope. Here, when one stomps on the hillside, he/she hears a loud sound resonating from the earth below. Its name, Xiangshan, means a hill which produces a heavy sound.

Wongding is another hilltop located close by. Similarly, its name (pronounced "wong") describes the sound which results from a wooden hammer or a stone hitting the ground. Together with the Strange Slope, these sights comprise the "Three Mysteries" of the scenic area.

"Five Great Mountains"

The area surrounding the Strange Slope Scenic Area is lush and mountainous. Yunmao Mountain is tranquil yet prominent with its lofty peak remaining veiled by clouds year-round. Wolong Mountain winds up and down like a crouching dragon with valleys on its foot covered with Chinese scholar trees. Every year during May and June, petals whirl around covering the whole valley with a snowy guise. Guibei Mountain, which looks like three tortoises floating in the water, together with other two mountains, Changkong Mountain and Dagu Mountain, make up the famous "Five Great Mountains" of the Strange Slope Scenic Area.

Beautiful flowers & relative activities

In this area, there has Chinese scholar-tree forest of nearly 1,000mu. The flower blossoms in the last 10 days of each May. The fragrant smell spreads and many people come here to enjoy the nature and mold their temperaments.

The main activities of Strange Slope Chinese Scholar-tree Flower Festival include poems composing and picture drawing on the spot, which take the Strange Slope culture as the main theme; activities organized by travel agencies and scholar-tree flower show organized by the press circle.

Other attractions

There are many other attractions around the Strange Slope such as enchanting lakes and a fresh spring, Xiamei Spring. There is a labyrinth between the Strange Slope and Xiangshan, as well as a path with 518 steep steps. The view from atop the steps is fully worthwhile; here visitors can view a panorama of the scenic area as well as the nearby Wolong Temple.

  • What is the best time to visit Shenyang?

    Late summer, middle autumn and late winter are all good times to travel in Shenyang. Winter is an especially good time to visit because the Ice Snow Festival is held then and is very entertaining and enjoyable.

    The lowest temperature of Shenyang is -28.5 C and the highest is 36.1 C. July is the hottest month of the year with an average temperature of 24.7 C. It is much cooler than almost all the cities in southern China.

    The seasons of spring and summer are decorated with green plants; autumn is short but is so sunny nearly everyday; winter is like a pretty girl with long and beautiful white skirt.

    Shenyang West Lake is located in Xinmin City, about 48 kilometers (about 29.8 miles) away from Shenyang City. From every 25th, July to 10th, August, a splendid lotus festival is held. Thousands of tourists will come to Shenyang West Lake to enjoy the fantastic beauty.

    Strange Slope Pagoda Tree Flower Festival
