Snail Hill Overview & Map Weather Transportation Information
One of the most renowned scenic spots along the Li River, Snail Hill is located 1 kilometer on the south of Xingping Town and 64 kilometers from Guilin.
The origin of the name
With a relative height of 31.8 meters, this hill is 360 meters above sea level. A huge crevice spirals up from the bottom to the top, making the hill resemble a huge snail. Hence the name Snail Hill.
What to explore
Snail Cave
This landscape is known as karst landform and results from rock that has been chemically eroded away by slightly acidic water running through cracks in the underlying limestone bedrock. South of Snail Hill lies Snail Cave, a name derived from the hill. The cave has two parts, the bigger one in the east and the smaller one in the west.
Stalactites in various shapes
Stalactites, in shapes of birds, beasts, fruits and flowers, are scattered around the cave. The most attractive and astonishing sights are the three snail stones which are hanging upside down. One is as white as snow, one is as dark as black lacquer and the other is as green as emerald. It is probable that they may capture your imagination and consider them to be the babies of the big snail (refers to the snail-like hill).
Tengjiao Nunnery
The hut nearby, named Tengjiao Nunnery, was originally built in the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644). It consists of two sections-Sanbao (three treasures) Hall and Kuixing (god that governs literature and writing) Pavilion. Every year, on 3rd of the 3rd lunar month, 6th of the 6th lunar month and 9th of the 9th lunar month, people around will take their children here to pray for good marks.
