书童山 '青蒿点破漓江水,行舟划破万重山,多娇江山人醉眼,奇秀书童独沾光'

Shutong Hill

Schoolboy Hill is located southeast of the confluence of the Tianjia River and Li River. It is the smallest peak along the bank of the Li River. It is nearly 2 kilometers (about 1.24 miles) away from Yangshuo County.

Legend

There is a legend about the hill. It is said that long ago, there was an evil dragon in the Li River. It often hovered on the Li River and endangered the local people. One day a schoolboy received a sealed book from his teacher. The book taught him how to conquer this vicious creature. When the dragon saw this book, it fell down to the river. In case the dragon might be playing dead, the schoolboy, holding the book, stood by the riverside and changed into a hill (Schoolboy Hill) to protect the local people.

What to enjoy

Schoolboy Hill

A rock of 10 meters (about 32.8 feet) high stretches out in a slot on the north hillside. Standing by the river, Schoolboy Hill takes the shape of a young man in loose robe and big sleeves. Looking more closely, it resembles a schoolboy absorbed in reading - just as the legend suggests, hence the name Schoolboy Hill (Shutong Hill). The hill and its picturesque surroundings fascinate many photographers and tourists.

Surrounding attractions

To the south of this hill lies majestic Chanticleer Hill, which looks like a rooster heralding the break of day. This hill and Schoolboy Hill compose a picture meaning "study in the dawn." Tianjia Bay, studded with hamlets and bamboo, lies to the west of Schoolboy Hill. Zhuobi Peak, like an upside-down brush, sits on the eastern side of Schoolboy Hill. These peaks are mirrored in the still water of the Li River like a colorful landscape painting. Many old buildings and bridges will be found along the banks of the Li River.

The old saying

As an old saying goes: East or West, Guilin is the best. Guilin is world famous for its waters and mountains. Guilin's scenery is often noted as the most beautiful of the world. Yangshuo's scenery is, arguably, superior to that of Guilin.

How to get there

Located in the southeast of Yangshuo County, Schoolboy Hill can be reached by bike. Cross Yangshuo Bridge and take the right turnoff after about 300 meters. Continue straight on the gravel road to the Li River. Follow the river for several hundred meters and you are at the shooting spot. Watch out for traffic as the rural road is rather narrow.

Photography Tips

It is preferred to shoot in late autumn with backlit red leaves as foreground.
