Known as a Treasure Land, Pudong New Area has undergone amazing changes and has begun to take shape through 16 years of development and construction, a model of an externally-oriented, multifunctional and modern new urban district is emerging on the eastern bank of the Huangpu River.

Where is it

Pudong New Area is situated at the middle position of China's coastal areas opening to the outside world and at the estuary where the Yangtze River empties itself into the sea. Adjacent to Shanghai's urban districts with a solid and strong foundation, backed up by the Yangtze River Delta with rich resources and talents and facing the Pacific and East Asian Region.

How it got its name

It is named "Pudong" because of its location on the east side of the Huangpu river, on the opposite of Puxi, the west side.

What used to be

Used to be a vast farmland where the locals grew vegetables and planted fruits, the Pudong New Area was declared by the Chinese government to develop and open up on April 18, 1990. Thus awoke this sleeping land and starting the development and construction there on a large scale.

It has a pleasant climate all year round with an average annual temperature of 16.2 degrees centigrade, an average annual rainfall of 1,183.1 millimeters, an average annual 122 rainy days and an average annual sunshine of 2068.6 hours.

Getting around

Since the beginning of its development in 1990 when plans were first announced, Pudong has become a New Open Economic Development Zone, and has emerged as China's financial and commercial hub. Pudong is home to the Lujiazui Finance and Trade Zone, the Shanghai Stock Exchange, and a skyline that includes the symbolic Oriental Pearl Tower, the Jin Mao Building, and the Shanghai World Financial Centre, reflective of Shanghai and China's rapid economic development.

Lujiazui

Lujiazui is an important financial district in Pudong, Shanghai. In 2005 the State Council reaffirmed the positioning of the 31.78 km2 Lujiazui area, as the only finance and trade zone among the 185 state-level development zones on the mainland China.

The Shanghai Stock Exchange

The shanghai stock exchange is a Chinese stock exchange based in the city of Shanghai, with a market capitalization of nearly $3.02 trillion (2007) making it the largest in mainland China and fifth largest in the world. The current exchange was re-established on November 26, 1990 and was in operation on December 19 of the same year. It is a non-profit organization directly administered by the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC).

The Jin Mao Tower

The jin mao toweris an 88-story landmark supertall skyscraper in the Lujiazui area of the Pudong district of Shanghai, People's Republic of China. It contains offices and the Shanghai Grand Hyatt hotel. Until 2007 it was the tallest building in the PRC, the fifth tallest in the world by roof height and the seventh tallest by pinnacle height. Along with the Oriental Pearl Tower, it is a centerpiece of the Pudong skyline. It was surpassed on September 14, 2007 by the Shanghai World Financial Center.

The Oriental Pearl Tower

It was designed by Jia Huan Cheng of the Shanghai Modern Architectural Design Co. Ltd. Construction began in 1991 and the tower was completed in 1995. At 468 meters (1,535 feet) high, it is the tallest tower in Asia, and the third tallest tower in the world. The Oriental Pearl Tower belongs to the World Federation of Great Towers.

The Shanghai World Financial Center

The shanghai world financial center is a supertall skyscraper under construction in Shanghai, China. It is a mixed use skyscraper which will consist of offices, hotels, conference rooms, observation decks, and shopping malls on the ground floors.

Getting there

By air

Shanghai Pudong International Airport is the main hub for China Eastern Airlines and Shanghai Airlines, and a major international hub for Air China. A total of 28.92 million passengers passed through the airport in 2007, 45% higher than the 20 million capacity of Terminal 1 which was the sole operating terminal during that period, making the airport the 3 rd busiest in the People's Republic of China.

By train

A magnetic levitation train began operating in 2004, moving passengers between the airport and Longyang Road Metro station. The Metro's Line 4 Loop and Line 6 also began operation in Pudong in 2007.

By subway

Line 2 forms the west-east axis of the Shanghai metro network, intersecting with the north-south axis Line 1 at People's Square. Currently Line 2 runs from Songhong Road in the west to Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park in the east, passing under the Huangpu river and the Lujiazui financial district in Pudong.

    The four seasons are easy to tell apart. The weather is pleasant, and the number of all kinds of products is large in Spring and Autumn.

    Every June and July is the mold rain season, so it is usually humid in hotel rooms. Umbrella is a necessary thing to bring with during the rainy weather.

    The coldest time is from late January to early February. Even though there is not much snow, warm clothes are still needed, because cold wind is always unendurable. Hotel rooms are equipped with air-conditions, so please stay warm in the room.

    It is usually super hot in July and August. Weather with higher than 35 C usually stays for about ten days, so that prevention from overheat is very necessary.
