蓬莱阁 八仙过海 神秘仙境

Penglai, located in Shandong Province of eastern China, is a world famous coastal tour city with mild summers great for sightseeing and holidays.

Having long been known as a fairyland, Penglai, Yingzhou and Fangzhang were said to be the three divine mountains in the sea for immortals to live in. It is said that Penglai was the place that Emperor Qin Shi Huang looked for the elixir of life, and the place where the great Emperor Wu of the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC- 24) paid his sacred visit. In addition, the famous legend of the Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea adds a mysterious atmosphere to Penglai. It is said that the eight immortals crossed the sea by different tricks of their own without ships or boats after they got drunk in the Penglai Pavilion. Hence, there left a popular saying that "like the Eight Immortals crossing the sea, each one showing his or her special feats; each tries to outwit the other."

Penglai Pavilion Scenic Area is perched on top of Danya Mountain at the northernmost part of Jiaodong peninsula, Yantai. The scenic area includes Penglai Pavilion, Penglai Water City, Penglai Pavilion Xiyuan, and so on.

PengLai pavilion ,which established in 1061 in north song dynasty, gained its fame as one of the four most famous towers in ancient china with yellow crane tower, yueyang tower and tengwang pavilion, the scenic spot, standing on the top of the red danya cliff consists of six main buildings including penglai pavilion, palace of heaven queen, palace of dragon king, luzu hull, sanqing hall, mituo temple and their accessories, they form a gigantic complex of ancient buildings and occupy and area of 18.500 sq.m.

Penglai Pavilion is known by the Chinese as "the Fairyland on the Land." The pavilion has numerous calligraphy works by famous writers, couplets hung on the columns of the hall, and stone inscriptions everywhere, and as it was once the gathering place for many renowned scholars and poets.

Penglai Pavilion Scenic Area is a very good place to witness a magical mirage that often occurs here, and it is also a good place to appreciate the magnificent sun rise in the mornings.

Penglai water fortress is one of the earliest and best preserved ancient military ports of china, a nationally protected historic relic .it consists of water gate docks, batteries and other military constructions, clinging to the mountains and facing the sea, and it enhances each other's beauty with Penglai pavilion. In 1982 it was designated as a key national cultural relic along with the Penglai Pavilion.

To the east of Penglai Pavilion is a museum with an ancient style garden. It exhibits cultural relics, and is the second museum in China with ancient ships as its subject.

To the west of Penglai Pavilion is the Penglai Pavilion Xiyuan. This scenic spot is about one kilometer (about 0.6 miles) from the Penglai Pavilion, and embraces luxuriant trees, fresh air and a tranquil beach. Attractions include a fisher-folk village, yurts and a Shuilian Dong (water curtain cave), combining natural and man-made landscapes.

Besides enjoying seeing the area, visitors can experience local customs. Temple Fair is a traditional annual activity. January 16th by the lunar calendar is regarded as Tianhou's birthday, so local people from near and far go to Tianhou Palace to pray. At that time, locals present a wonderful performance.

    There is a big difference between morning and nights temperature. The average temperature is between 16-26 degrees C, so you should put on or take off clothes at suitable times to prevent from catching a cold. Wear warm clothes when climbing Mt.Taishan, because the temperature on the mountain can be 8 C 10 degrees lower than at the foot of the mountain. Dont forget to bring raincoats or umbrellas.


  • What to notice about dining in Shandong?

    • The food in Shandong belongs to Lu cuisine. The seasoning of Lu cuisine is a bit strong, so that there is a big difference between Lu cuisine and Yue Cuisine. If you dont like strong seasoning you can ask for light seasoning dish.

    • Drink enough water, and eat more fresh fruit.

    • Do not eat food or snack at the little stands along the street, they might not be clean.
