Nanpu and Yangpu Bridges Overview & Map Weather Transportation Information
These were the first bridges to span the Huangpu River and were catalysts for Pudong's extraordinary development. They were financed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) loans totaling US$ 155 million. The Nanpu and Huangpu River Bridges are running at near capacity - Nanpu averages 120,000 vehicles a day while sister bridge Yangpu handles 100,000 vehicles crossing a day. When the showcase bridges were completes in 1991 and 1993 respectively, they were a source of pride for Shanghai and the whole country.
It was called "two dragons playing the pearl"
The two bridges of the Huangpu River combined with the Oriental Pearl Tower form the magnificent view of "two dragons playing the pearl".
Nanpu Bridge
Nanpu Bridge's centre span of 423 meters was by far China's longest cable-staged bridge-until it was surprised by Yangpu Bridge with a world record centre span of 602 meters. The world-class bridges represented a significant technological triumph for Shanghai. Nanpu was designed by the Shanghai Municipal Engineering Design Institute, using the Alexander Fraser Bridge in Vancouver as a model. ADB provided technical assistance by bringing an international group of world-class engineers to review it. Chinese engineers learned quickly and designed Yangpu on their own.
Being the fourth largest double tower and double cable slant-drawn bridge in the world, Nanpu Bridge was completed and open to traffic on Dec. 1, 1991. The total length of the bridge is 8346 meters. Its main part is 846 meters long and 31.36 meters wide, with a net height of 46 meters, allowing ships of 55000 tons to pass. Nanpu Bridge is so gracefully designed that thousands and thousands of tourists have been attracted by its beauty and majesty.

Yangpu Bridge
Located at the north of the Suzhou Creek and the lower section of the Huangpu River, Yangpu Bridge was completed and open to traffic in Oct., 1993. It looks like a sleeping dragon lying in the sky. The total length of the bridge is 7,658 meters, with its main part 1,172 meters long and 30.35 meters wide. The span of the bridge is 602 meters, with 6 lanes for motor vehicles. Yangpu Bridge was constructed by means of up-to-date technology. It is of a double tower, double cable, overlapped slant drawn structure. People generally consider Nanpu Bridge and Yangpu Bridge "Sister Bridges".

Yangpu and Nanpu bridges are, at 7,658 and 8,346 metres respectively, among the longest bridges of the world. They cross the Huangpu River, connecting Pudong to the rest of Shanghai. The distance between two bridges is 11 kilometers. Both are of the double cable-stayed suspension type.
