Its history and scenery have given it status as one of the 10 famous mountains in China in the 1960s and a state scenic spot in the 1980s. Oddly shaped peaks, precipitous rocks, hardy pines and pear flowers are the four common attractions. Nine hundred and ninety-nine summits (nearly 1,000) were named Qianshan (1,000 summits). Famous summits such as fairy platform summit and five-Buddha summit offer panoramic views of Mt. Qianshan. Climbing the mountain, rocks of various shapes will enchant the eyes. Some look like birds, animals and human beings; others are delicately and naturally shaped with eccentric characteristics. One, called the wooden fish, stands out. In winter, the mountain is covered with awesome pine trees, accounting for 40 per cent of the mountain's vegetation. In May, pear flowers are in full bloom all over the mountains while the valley sweetens the mountain slopes.
Like many famous mountains in China, Mt. Qianshan is well known for its history and religious heritage. It is a sacred place of Buddhism in Northeast China. Buddhism at Mt. Qianshan goes back as far as 1,400 years to the Northern Wei Dynasty (386-534), and the mountain became a 10th century religious sanctuary for the Liao (907-1125) and Jin (1115-1234) dynasties. In the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), Taoism and Buddhism co-existed harmoniously in the mountain. Nowadays, the mountain shelters 40 monasteries with about 1,000 Buddhist monks and Taoist priests in peak season. There are still over 20 well-preserved temples on the mountain such as Zuyue Monastery,Dragon Spring Monastery,Da'an Monastery,Zhonghui Monastery and Xiangyan Monastery. The mountain's Buddha Maitreya, 70 meters high, has particularly wowed the world. Mt. Qianshan makes Anshan the city with the largest jade reserves in China. And the jade from Xiuyan County has ranked first-rate in a national jade contest. The city offers more than 150 varieties of jade ware and has recently established a Chinese jade carving garden.
The Qianshan Hot Spring Tourist and Vacation Resort are among the three most famous hot spring resorts in Anshan. The hot spring is rich in minerals and the average temperature is 70C (158F). It is an ideal place for vacationing. The resort has such facilities as a swimming pool and entertainment, and it can accommodate 2,000 tourists a day.
Featured with those beautiful peaks, precipitous cliffs, secluded valleys, high-situated Taoism and Buddhism temples, grotesque pine trees in strange shape, exuberant flowers of various kinds, etc, Mt. Qianshan has been given the name of "Treasure Pearl of North China."
