Mt. Geleshan

歌乐山 '半山烟云半山松'

Full of lush forests, Mt. Geleshan is quite still. However, by the time of raining or blowing, the whole area will echo with resounding voice. In this way, the people in the ancient times gave it the name of "Mt. Geleshan" (the mountains of joyful singing).

Misty Mountain

Chongqing is essentially a mountain city, surrounded on all sides by steep hills which keep the fog and mist in the basin. The Yangtze and Jialing Rivers embrace the downtown area here. So, a pleasant walk in the misty Mt. Geleshan definitely provides light relief from the industrial city views prevalent throughout much of the area.

Mt. Geleshan Forest Park

Mt. Geleshan Forest Park is located in Shapingba District of Chongqing, Sichuan Province. It occupies a total area of 2 square kilometers composed of mountains, water, forests, springs, caves, clouds, fog and other natural landscape. They are clear, quiet, simple and unsophisticated.

Lin Yuan (Lins' Garden)

Located in a canyon at the southern foot of the Mt. Geleshan, Lin Yuan (Lins' Garden) is the mansion of Lin Sen, Chairman of the Koumintang government, and where he was buried after his death. So, the place was thus called. In 1938, Chiang Kai-shek built a mansion in this place and it was used as one of his own private villas. Therefore, the place has become more fascinating than before.

Chongqing Martyrs' Mausoleum at Mt. Geleshan

Chongqing Martyrs' Mausoleum at Mt. Geleshan is located at the foot of the Mountain in Shapingba District. The former headquarters, radio station and prison of the Bureau of Investigation and Statistics of the Military Council (a colossal secret service of the Kuomintang) have become the mausoleum for those who died a martyr's death there in China's dark days. In the dying years of World War II, it was the site of the "Sino-US Institute for Cooperation in Special Technology."

Bai Gongguan & Zhazidong

At the northern foot of the Mt. Geleshan there stand two well-known historical relics: Bai Gongguan and Zhazidong. It was precisely in these two places the KMT jailed and killed more than 300 Communist revolutionaries before moving to Taiwan in 1949.

  • Is Chongqing's weather very hot? What to notice?

Chongqing is located in the transition area between the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the Middle-lower Yangtze Plain. Which is famous for its hot summers and it is known as one of 'the three furnace cities'. The other two are Nanjing and Wuhan. Bring light clothing such as T-shirts, shorts and sandals if you come in summer. Also, remember to bring your umbrella, sunglasses, and suntan lotion to avoid the heat of the 'burning furnace'. The best season to visit Chongqing is in spring, autumn and winter.

  • Could i get to know something about minority cultures in Chongqing?

Chongqing is a multi-cultural city, with about 23 distinct minority cultures. The Tujia and the Miao are the largest two minorities in Chongqing and mainly inhabit the Qianjiang Development District and the Fuling District. Every January 3 to 15 of the lunar calendar, Tujia people hold grand activities of worship, praying and dancing. The Miao people express themselves through singing.

  • Can i tour around Chonqing by bike?

The bike is the worst choice for people who understand the structure of the mountain city. First timers to Chongqing should be warned it is very easy to get lost. The bus system and monorail are advised as the best forms of transportation.

  • What sourvenirs should I buy and where?

The local "Tan Mu Jiang" (Carpenter Tan) carpentry shop is worth a visit for its fine wood artwares

  • Notice this if you tend to drink beer in a bar

There are many bars in Chongqing, but most are underpopulated. Several branches of the Newcastle Arms offer the closest thing to proper beer, but be sure they get your beer from the pump and not the slop tray.
