Changbai Waterfall

Apart from Heavenly Lake (Tianchi), the main waterfall in Changbai Mountains (Changbai pubu) probably exerts the strongest appeal for travelers in this region. This is one of many waterfalls that lead off from the lake, but this one, near the northern corner, is the largest and most famous.

The falls are the terminus of the 1250 meter long Chengcuo River. The falls are known for both their silvery sheen, and the mammoth rock at the upper ledge that splits the flow into two. The water flows over the edge, hits the pool 68 meters below, and the sound of this can be heard for miles around. The pool below then splits into two itself, and these are the source of both the Songhua and Tumen Rivers. The falls can be reached by heading 500m to the east of the car park.

The Heavenly Lake (Tianchi)

The most famous of the sights in the Changbai region is the Heavenly Lake (Tianchi), the deepest alpine lake in China, with a depth of around 300 meters. The lake is the starting point for any hikes around the area and the minibuses here will drop you off at the entrance. The lake is the center point of one of the many Volcanic Craters that are scattered throughout Changbai Mountains, and this is the largest of them.

The egg-shaped Tianchi, with a circumference of 13km, covers a total area of 10 square kilometers on top the mountain. The Chinese here like to say that Tianchi, at an elevation of 2,194 meters above sea level and surrounded by 16 peaks around, is like a sapphire set in gold. The lake, storing up to two billion cubic meters of water, is huge, the source of three of Jilin's most famous rivers, the Songhua, the Tumen and the Yalu. The water in the lake also comes from a variety of sources, from rivers, natural precipitation and the springs below.

Nature Reserve & Scenic Area

Nature Reserve & Scenic Area

The Changbai Mountains run northeast to southwest along the Chinese-Korean border for about a thousand kilometers, covering an area of over 200,000 hectares, extending 78.5 kilometers north to south, and 53.3 kilometers west to east. The highest peak, Baitou Shan, at 2,744m, is the tallest mountain on the eastern side of the continent, and with its long, harsh winters and humid summers, this is the only mountain range in East Asia to possess alpine tundra. They are covered by snow for years. Because of the gray or white rocks, the mountains are called Changbai (long and white) Mountains. The huge lake, Tian Chi, high in the Changbai Mountains, is one of the highlights of Dongbei, and the area around, the Changbai Shan Nature Reserve, with jagged peaks emerging from swathes of lush pine forest, is beautiful and wild.
