With a drifting way of 47 kilometers, Mengdonghe River is like a unique natural paint. It comes to be a golden adventurous river, for the green woods and up to sky cliffs standing by its side. Moreover, one can find flying falls or streaming springs and woods of Karst peaks reflect each other.

Where it is

Mengdonghe River is situated 80km southeast of Zhangjiajie City, Hunan Province, nestled among mountains, a remote canyon towering limestone cliffs, a beautiful river that's ranked among the top ones in china.

Located in the Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Region, it is one of the sources of the culture of Tujia, and covers two counties of Yongshun and Guzhang. The river flows 200 kilometers in Yongshun County. An area of 4,000 hectares along the river has been opened for tourists.

Why do visit

It was honored as the No.1 Drifting in the world by famous socialist Mr. Feixiaotong. And now it is one of the just two 4A standard drifting routes in China approved by China international Travel Service. At both sides of Mengdonghe River, there are cliffs standing superbly, falls suspending high in the air, ancient relics full of the place.

On the drifting boat, seeing mountains on both sides passing quickly and the stream rolling on with roars, one feels as if they were dropping to the deep valley from the sky, or jumping to the air from the ground, or galloping on horse backs, or riding clouds and mist. With great admiration, one feels shocked first and then delighted. The drifting is extraordinarily thrilling and one will never forget it!

Rafting on Mengdonghe River

Major scenic spots include Eight-Scene Cave, Small Dragon Cave, and natural cliff side murals, Golden-Star Gorge, Fairy Gorge, Line of Sky, Jumping Monkey, Yuanyang Gorge and Laojun Gorge. Tourists can enjoy rafting on Si River, a tributary of Mengdong Rirer. The river flows along a narrow valley and the water is swift. It is a great adventure to drift on it.

  It's necessary for you to know something about your destination such as weather, the good time to travel there.

  Zhangjiajie is subtropical moist mountain climate, so the temperature is mild, rainfall is abundant, and frost period is short, the annual average temperature is 16C. Zhangjiajie is attractive all year round.

  In spring, all the flowers on mountains blossom, it is really a good time to do some hiking. In summer the forests flourish and are strongly fragrant, Zhangjiajie becomes a perfect place to spend summer. Autumn is a romantic season with the painting-like scenery, tourists have a lot to do here, like tasting fruit, hiking mountain.   Generally speaking, Spring & Autumn is more suitable for traveling here, so, April, May, September, and October is the best time. However, please avoid coming here during golden week time as much as possible, then tourists are crowded and you have to pay much more for your food and accommodation.

• What to pack for a trip to Zhangjiajie?

  • It rains a lot here, so bring umbrella or buy disposable raincoat, and wear comfortable clothes, light sports shoes if you plan to do hiking.

  • Also, don't forget to bring more clothes to keep warm in case of cold weather.

  • You'd better bring less carry-on baggage, but the things like sunscreen, medicine for insects' biting, cooling ointment should be included.
