Mallikurwatur Ruins Overview & Map Weather Transportation Information
Also known as Mallikurwatur Ruins, the ancient city lies 25 km southwest of Hotan, on the west bank of the Jade Dragon Kashgar River. Situated on a 1500 m long belt, it is believed to be the ancient city of Yutian Kingdom although disputes claim it used to be a monastery compound. From 1977, potsherds, ancient coins and other items have been excavated. However, as long as so far, archeologists are still unable to sketch out details of this mystical ancient city.
Something about Hotan
This ancient city of Mallikurwarur is located in Hotan. Hotan has remained famous for centuries for its jade, silk and carpets. Located on the southern rim of the Taklimakan Desert, it is a place where the state of Pishan, Yutian, and Jingjue were established. There are historic sites and various unearthed cultural relics in Hotan. There are a lot of attractions, for example, Mallikurwatur Ruins, Amannishahan Tomb and so on.
Mystical ancient city
Majority of the ruins are buried underground in the deep sands. The only trace of the city is a broken section of a city wall in the north. The wall took shape of an arc and is 100 meters long, 2.60 meters high and 1.6 meters thick. It was built with adobes of different sizes. It is very interesting that all the adobes were carved with strange symbols and archeologists have collected many such seemingly queer signs but so far has no body figured out the meanings.
Ancient stone tools, pottery pieces, coins, beads litter everywhere around the city wall. Over this century, the ruins have seen groups of explorers and large amount of relic has been collected. However, as long as so far, archeologists are still unable to sketch out details of this mystical ancient city.

Khotan? Hotan? Hetian? I'm confused...
Hotan is the most common way today of spelling the name of this city in English.
The pinyin for the Chinese name of the city today is Hetian. The Chinese transliteration of the name is used on buses and in some translations of Chinese.
One source says, "It is documented in early Prakrit documents as Kustana, or "the Breast of the Earth."
Whichever pronunciation you choose, its most ancient known name came from the settlers from northern India in the mid-third century BCE. But the Hotan oasis was inhabited for probably 10,000 years before then, based on tool finds.
Mallikurwarur was Uygur language, which means White Castle. Majority of the ruins are buried underground in the deep sands. The only trace of the city is a broken section of a city wall in the north.
