Long Island Overview & Map Weather Transportation Information
Located in the Xiangjiang River in the west of the city town, it is 5km long and 0.4km at the widest, so it is also called the Long Island. Groves of orange trees are found at the southern tip of the island, and the Heavenly Heart Pavilion (Tianxinge), built on the remains of an old wall dating from the Han Dynasty, and commands a panoramic view of the river and the city of Changsha.
A look at Changsha
Situated in the river valley along the lower part of Xiang River, Changsha is the capital city of Hunan Province. The recorded history of Changsha can be traced back 3000 years.
Hunan is the hometown of Chairman Mao. Changsha, the city where Long Island is located, has the middle school Chaiman Mao attended when he was young. He also once wrote a special poem dedicated to Long Island making the island famous nationwide.
Changsha - "Long Sand Isle"
It is a beautiful old city located on the Beijing-Guangzhou Railway and the Xiangjiang River in the eastern part of Hunan Province. It got the name of Changsha - "long sand isle" - because of a shoal in the river.
Roles in history and nowadays
Changsha belonged to the State of Chu 2,500 years ago and was later ruled by the Qin Dynasty. Today, it is the political, economic, and cultural center of Hunan, of which it is the capital. It is a comprehensively developed industrial city, with machinery, textiles, and food processing as its mainstays. Changshan's handicraft products include porcelain, embroidery, carved bamboo articles, and stone carvings.
Transfer point
Some tourists choose Changsha as their transfer point when traveling on to Zhangjiajie, Yueyang, Hengyang or the famous Phoenix Town in the western part of Hunan, so here are some things to do and see whilst there.
Long Island
A walk across the No. 1 Bridge over the Xiangjiang River, just opposite the Yuelu scenic area is the Long Island (Juzi Zhou). In midstream of the Xiangjiang River, it runs almost the entire length of the city and gets the name for its long and narrow sandbank.
The Long Island Park
It was said that Chairman Mao Zedong studied in the No. 1 Normal School here when he was young, and often went swimming in the river or took a walk with friends around the island.
Today, a scenic park where thousands of orange trees are planted has been built with a marble monument in the middle with Mao's inscriptions and it is a good place for people to escape the summer heat.
Catch the leaves in autumn
Fall is the season of leaves. Shedding their green outfits, leaves opt for a more colorful appearance when autumn comes. Red maples, golden phoenix trees and orange aspens all work together to present a bouquet of colors before they fall off the trees.
With thousands of oranges trees planted in the park, you can have a wonderful view of the colors all the island. And having a walk through the forest at this particular time makes fall is so irresistible.
Eat oranges
Known also as Orange Island, the island gets its name because it is abundant in mandarin oranges and fall is when they are harvested. Tourists come to Long Island during the autumn, not only to enjoy a beautiful view of golden ripe oranges, but to eat them too.
Something to bear in mind
One thing a traveler should bear in mind is that the weather changes greatly during the transit period between spring and summer or summer and autumn. An unexpected summer rainstorm could arrive suddenly on a sunny day, so make sure to bring an umbrella with you. The long rain period starts in October and continues for one or two months, therefore one should plan indoor tourist activities during the latter part of a year.
