Lake Taihu is just like a bright pearl set in the Yangtze River delta. It crosses Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces, where 48 islets of different sizes and 72 peaks and peninsulas along the lake combine to form a panorama of great natural beauty. The Lake is a famous scenic spot in China and is famed for its lake, its hills and its splendid man-made scenery.
Fish and rocks
The lake has to its credit a thriving fishing industry as well as its ornamental limestone rocks that is native to no other place. These are much favored as accessories used in decorating traditional Chinese gardens in China.
The soul of the Lake
The soul of the Lake Taihu lies in the Wuxi Taihu Lake Scenic Zone, which is located to the north of the lake while the area's most attractive spot is the Turtle Head Islet.
Yuantouzhu (Turtle Head Islet)
Out of all the other islets, Yuantouzhu (Turtle Head Islet) is the place most worth visiting. It is an islet stretching into the lake, whose shape is really like the head of a turtle protruding from the water. Lake Taihu and the surrounding magnificence will bewitch your eyes when you climb onto "Turtle Head." When the soft breezes blow, waves roll and the hills in the distance look like an overlapping landscape painting. The scene is really captivating.
Turtle Head Islet Park
Turtle Head Islet Park is mainly made of the natural landscape, augmented by man-made additions. Flowers and trees can be seen everywhere. Various kinds of architecture are strategically placed among the trees and shrubs. All conspire to make the park graceful and elegant.
Covered by dense plants, the park has numerous rocks in various shapes. There are also many beautiful constructions built among the trees, including Changchun Bridge (Evergreen Bridge), Feiyun Pavilion (Scud Pavilion), Jinsong Pavilion (Sturdy Pine Pavilion), Wanfang Pavilion (All-places Pavilion), and Guangfu Temple (Bright Fortune Temple), etc.
Lake Li
The famous site of the Taihu Lake is the Lake Li, also known as Lake Five-Li. lying on the lakefront is a Liyuan Garden. Both of them are named after a famous historical figure Fan Li, living in the Spring and Autumn Period (770 B.C. - 476 B.C.).
Legend has it that after assisting the king in conquering the Wu Kingdom, Fan Li, a senior official of the Yue Kingdom, went boating with the beauty of beauties Xizi in the Lake Five-Li. Later, people changed the name of the lake into the Lake Li to commemorate this.
The overall arrangement of the Liyuan Garden is divided into two parts, with a rockery piled up with Lake Taihu rocks along one side, and a thousand-step corridor and a long bank along the other. With a long wall on one side, the thousand-step corridor is situated closely next to the Li Lake. The wall is enchased with 889 windows of various designs together with some precious carved stones.
Historical sites
Besides the natural scenery of Lake Taihu, there are many ruins of historic sites, such as the Grand Canal of the Sui Dynasty (581-618), the Islets in the lake along with the coastal places in the east, the north and the west both of which are the cradle land of the culture of Wuyue (this culture touches on traditions that flow from or refer to Jiangsu, Zhejiang and the southeast part of Anhui Province today) and so on.
Other famous spots
Other famous spots in the Wuxi Taihu Lake Scenic Zone include the Sanshan Park (Three-hills Park), the Plum Park, the Xihui Park, No.2 Spring Under Heaven, and the Jichang Garden. The Wu Cultural Park built recently has become a new hot spot, attracting numerous tourists.
Enjoy eating
Lake Taihu is an abundant source of fish. Traveling there, you can taste the famous delicious food known as "Lake Taihu Three White," including white shrimp, whitebait and whitefish. The feast is generally prepared in the boat as one floats on the placid waters of Lake Taihu. It is very well worth a visit.
