Kizil Thousand Buddha Caves

Kizilgaha Thousand Buddha Cave was once hewn high on the cliffs of the Northern Bank of the Muzat River during the early third to eighth Centuries of the first Millennium AD. It was thought to be China's oldest, largest and westernmost Buddhist grottoes.

The scale

The caves at the Kizil site are thought to be the largest and the oldest in China. Those caves, was divided into west and inner valley and rear mountain areas extending over 3 kilometers (1.86 miles). They comprise 236 numbered caves and 10,000 square meters of murals, most of which relate to Buddhism.

    Situated deep in the interior of Asia and not penetrated by the air currents from the oceans, the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region has conspicuous continental climate, with highly changeable temperature, great difference in temperature between day and night, abundant sunshine, intense evaporation and little precipitation.

    The mean annual temperature of Xinjiang is 11.7 C - the hottest month, July, averaging about 25 C and the coldest month, January, -20 C in the north and -10 C in the south - and a mean annual precipitation of 150 mm.
