Kashgar is sited west of Taklamkan Desert at the feet of the Tianshan mountains range and is an oasis. The town has a history of over 2,000 years. It was said that Banchao, Eastern Han's envoy to the Western Region once stayed here on his way. It was a summer palace during the Kalahan Dynasty.

How many people live here?

Kashgar old town contains a large group of Uygur residential houses. The Old Town city is now home to 630 homes with more than 2450 people, all of whom are Muslims.

What to see

Explore the maze of narrow streets in this oldest residential area of Kashgar. Houses were originally built along a natural slope, and extended over the years with many streets either fully or half-covered. Traditional Uughur life continues here in time-honored fashion. You can visit local families, see potteries, bakeries, embroidery, and local skills.

Ancient buildings in the town

The town is located at a precipitous position with mud-thatched buildings densely built one atop another. Numerous small lanes crisscross the town and reach every corner of it. Inside the town, are those hundreds-year-old, most of which are two or three-story simple architecture.

Ancient houses

The residential area has a long history and most of ancient houses have existed for a few centuries. Most homes are handed down from generation to generation for over 300 to 400 years. The structure roof, walls, doors, windows and colors remain unchanged for centuries. One home often reflects the history of a clan which is full of fertilities, developing, vicissitude and descendant continuance. Usually, each house is equipped with a staircase leads to the building top but be cautious that all of the staircases haven't been facilitated with protecting chains.

Courtyards in houses

Each house has a courtyard, some big and some small, the size of which is due to the terrain. Similarly, all the yards grow the Muslim-favored trees and flowers, such as mulberry, figs, megranate, almond, grape, rose, China rose. The yards are heavily shaded, proving a tranquil environment for relaxing and refreshing. Inside bigger yards, the owner even built up a pergola for grape vines.

Special cultural experience

Visiting the small alleys and knowing Uygur characteristic residence culture, you can enjoy and experience the culture and history that is contained in the small alleys and deep courtyards. In the alleys on platforms besides the residence marvel at the even more ancient primitive workshops for hand-made earthenware.Some17or18 antique workshops have been restored. Traditional Uughur life continues here in time-honored fashion. You can visit local families, see potteries, bakeries, embroidery, and local skills.
