Who built it
Jimei is the hometown of Mr. Tan Kah-Kee, a famous overseas Chinese leader who devoted himself wholly to education. And the school village was founded by him; it has had a long history of 90 years. In this small hamlet, Mr. Tan built 12 different kinds of schools including Xiamen University, a science center, gymnasium, library, hospital, and a navigation club. These facilities changed Jimei from a rural village into a sizeable town whose total student population of more than 100,000 exceeds that of the local residents.
Know more about Mr. Tan
The former residence of Mr. Tan is situated on Jiageng road in the town of Jimei. It still keeps its old look and visitors will contemplate its history. Mr. Tan lived frugally all his life. No one can be unmoved when they see how simple these daily necessities and clothing are. To the west of the residence is an exhibition of Mr. Tan's life story. Mr. Tan's former residence is now opened to visitors as a memorial hall and Returnees Garden and includes Mr. Tan's bronze statue as a memorial to him. If you're up for a grave undertaking, visit Tan's mausoleum, on the island of Aoyuan, or Turtle Park. The island is shaped like a turtle, a common shape for graves, because the turtle suggest longevity.

Buildings in the Village
All of Mr. Tan's buildings are constructed in his unique blend of Western and Chinese architecture, using red brick, white stone, and glazed tiles. Owing to the presence of these science halls, libraries and hospitals, the town was called "Jimei School Village" - a name renowned at home as well as abroad. So the Village, blending the Chinese architectural style with western one, has become a symbol of Jimei. Among the buildings of unique style are Daonan Lou in Jimen Middle School, Nanxun Lou in Overseas Chinese School and the Teaching Building of Navigation College.
The Dragon Boat Festival
The village is the venue of an annual dragon boat competition held during the Dragon Boat Festival. In front of the Daonan Lou is the Dragon Boat Pond, 800 meters long and 300 meters wide. Around it are seven pavilions of different styles, with curved eaves and carved pillars. They are called "Seven Stars Falling onto the Ground." In the middle of the pond stand two pavilions designed by Mr. Tan Kah-kee, which are named "Lonely Star Accompanying the Moon."
Every year, during the Dragon Boat Festival, the dragon boat racing is held in the pond with shining ripples and melodious Nanqu (south Fujian Opera) accompanied by drumbeats. Several international dragon boat racings have been held here and attracted groups of tourists at home and abroad.
