Huaxi Scenic Area Overview & Map Weather Transportation Information
Located on the outskirts of Guiyang city in Guizhou Province and embraced by mountains, Huaxi Scenic Area is endowed with dense vegetation and crystal-clear waters. It's a famous tourist scenic spot for being exquisite, meandering, quiet and secluded yet at the same time, rough, open and broad. There are 108 islands of various sizes and shapes on the lake.
Huaxi Park
Called "the Flower of Guizhou Plateau," Huaxi Park belongs to the Huaxi scenic spot area, which is 350.5 square kilometers in total. The most beautiful feature is the clear streams winding through hills and the flowers providing beautiful displays throughout the four seasons of the year. The water of Huaxi River is clear and clean. Huaxi is home to over 1,000 varieties of cultivated flowers which bloom year round.
A little bit about the history
Huaxi Park was built by a local country gentleman in the Qing Dynasty (1644 - 1911). He built towers and pavilions, planted trees and flowers on the hills, and built little islands in the water. In the 1930s, it was rebuilt as a park. After the founding of The People's Republic of China, the park was equipped with tourist facilities and renamed Huaxi Park, which means a park where flowers are in full bloom and streams flow.
Exquisite hills
The stream and the four hills in Huaxi Park are all naturally formed. Scenic attractions of the park are centered on the four small and exquisite hills: Kylin (Lin, an animal in Chinese legend), Phoenix (Feng), Turtle (Gui) and Snake (She). The Kylin Hill is the major one of the four. It resembles the shape of a prancing unicorn. On the top of the hill, stones of various shapes stand upright like the horn of the unicorn. On top of Phoenix Hill, one can overlook the stone houses, stone walls and stone village roads that crisscross the field. On Turtle and Snake Hills, with various stones in peculiar shapes bordering the roads, the scenery is also appealing.
Kylin Hill
Viewed from afar, the nearby Kylin Hill, less than a hundred meters in height, looks like a natural miniature potted scenery. It's covered with tiers of green rocks, circumscribed by zigzag trails, and penetrated by limestone grottoes. The Tower of Drifting Clouds nestles adroitly within the Hill. Ascending to the Hill top, one has a panoramic view of Huaxi: on the mountain sides, small bridges span the churning streams, waterfalls crash down upon the blue waters, and the rolling river slows down to merge with the belt-shaped small lake. Tourists can enjoy the beautiful sights along the riverbanks in a boat.
Huaxi River
The Huaxi River serpentines along exquisite small hills which are abound in limestone caves with gurgling underground streams. The clear and graceful waters of the winding Huaxi River flows through hills, over cliffs, under bridges and dashes against rock walls, gives rise to myriad little torrents, mini-waterfalls, small pools and tiny shoals. Along its two banks orderly arrayed are houses, terraces, pavilions, towers, villas, hotels, stairways etc. built with superb workmanship. All these add up to its fascinating beauty. A river tour from Dajiang Hill to Biyunwo offers views of beautiful landscapes along the entire river. Jitian Pavilion atop Unicorn Hill provides a panoramic view of the park.

Are there any travel tips about weather?
Whether for escaping from summer heat or winter cold, Guiyang is definitely a good destination.
However, due to the changeable weather on the Yungui Plateau where Guizhou is located, it is recommended that you take rain wear along with you and a folding umbrella is an asset! In addition, temperatures in the morning and the evening can often be rather low, so a windproof coat is necessary. The strong radiation from the sun means that you will also need our sun glasses and a sun hat - and don't forget your suntan lotion!
What good souvenirs can I buy there?
Some special local products like traditional art works, or local food are decent gifts for you friends and relatives.

What are some interesting festivals in Guiyang?
Liu Yue Liu literarily means a date, June 6. Actually it is a festival held on the sixth day of the sixth Chinese lunar month, hence the name. This festival is an important day for Buyi people to worship the cook's god and the mountain god.
Si Yue Ba is held annually on the eighth day of the lunar month. On this day, large numbers of Miao people put on their beautiful costumes and congregate in the center area of Guiyang City to celebrate this great festival by playing the Lusheng and flute, singing antiphonal songs and dancing.
Di Xi is a form of local drama. It is held on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month at Huaxi by Buyi People and other minority groups. The performers put on masks and costumes and engage in dancing and singing. Generally the performance tells a story of a battle or the loyalty between friends of ancient times
Does Guizhou have a lot of ethnic groups there?
Guizhou is a multi-region province. Apart from Han, there are about 17 other ethic groups that live here, such as Miao, Buyi, Dong, Yi, Shui, Hui, Zhuang, Yao, Man, Bai, Mongolia, Qiang and Tu.
We suggest that you 'do as the romans do' when you go to visit Guizhou, because there are a lot of customs and taboos in the ethnic groups. Also respect their tradition to avoid conflict.
Some customs about the Miaos
The Miaos usually keep open doors and are fond of drinking. Most of them can make home-made alcohol. Shaojiu is the most common alcohol. During a meal, the host might want his guest to drink some alcohol, if they refuse to drink, the host will not be happy. If you really can't drink, then please tell the host before the meal starts.
Some warnings about hotels
Hotels in small towns such as Rongjiang and Congjiang are of significantly lower standard. Heating is sometimes not available and western style toilets usually unavailable.

Electricity
The electricity used in China is 220 volt AC. Many middle and high-class hotel wash rooms have transformer plugs for electric shavers and hair dryers, but it is better to be prepared with an adapter plug.
Blending natural hills and rivers, idyllic scenery with ethnic features, Huaxi Park (Flower Stream Park) has gained the name of "Back Garden of Guiyang City". It is the center of the Huaxi Scenic Area.
