Getting around
What we see
Thw garden in the southeast part of town is more residence than garden but still has its share of rockeries, pavilions, and ponds. Trees, plants, and an elevated walkway are used rather ingeniously to make the garden appear much larger than it really is, a tactic employed in many classical southern Chinese gardens.
Covering a limited space of 0.7 hectare, the garden is special in that around its pool sits a variety of pavilions that are linked together to form an architectural belt 430 meters in length. A stroll around the pond along the winding corridor brings the visitor to every conceivable corner of the garden, which falls in two parts.
Heyuan Garden is a representative work of Yangzhou gardening in the Qing Dynasty. The garden is divided into three parts: the eastern, the western and southern part. The northern part is the rear garden, the central part is a courtyard in a mixed Chinese-Western style, a model of the combination of Chinese architectural art with Western style in this field; the southeastern part is an area of guarinite-built houses.
The Eastern Part
The eastern part is the site of the Boat Hall and the Peony Hall. North of the Boat Hall stands a building with an exotic name, "Phoenix Facing the Sun", where female guests were feasted. Theatrical performances were staged in a kiosk that stands in the center of a fish-shaped pool for the entertainment of theatre goers who were seated in a winding corridor.
The Southern Part
In the southern part of the pavilion, there is a landscape with flower nursery containing the Chinese national flower, Peony. It is relatively small but carries a special prestige because its rockeries are made up of special yellow rocks hence different from other gardens in Yangzhou and its neighbors.
The Western Part
The Western Part is comprised of houses linked together, central pavilion and rockery, and is the center of the garden, where the owner used to live.
The Butterfly Hall
The Butterfly Hall, the main hall of the garden, was where men were feasted. Ancient trees tower over the entire garden. which is a world of artificial mountains, with rocks of exotic images gazing longingly at each other and flowers in blossom in all four seasons.
Something must see
Walking across the pavilions and moving west along the mountain, you can then climb the tower by steps. The tower is built against the wall of the garden. It has a Banyue Terrace, where you can appreciate the moon at night and the scenery of the garden in daytimes. You will experience the different feelings on and down the platform.
- The corridor
At one side of Banyue Terrace stands the corridor which is divided into two by a wall. Both the lower and upper floors of the platform can get you to the west part of the garden. The corridor on the lower floor is decorated with the stone carving of Haishi Tie (a book containing models of handwriting or painting for learners to copy), the calligraphy by Su Dongpo.
- Louchuang
Louchuang, the artistic lay out of water-burnished bricks with exquisite designs. From the east of the floor you can see the wonderful scenery in the west of the garden. The unique design of louchuang, through which scenery could be spot, is one of major characteristics of Yangzhou gardens.
- Chuanlou
Cloisters in the garden connect the upper floors with the lower floors, they are over 400 meters long and can circle the garden, for which the building is named chuanlou ("chuan" means to be connected and "lou" means a building). The wainscot of Chuanlou is carved with paintings and calligraphies of Zheng Banqiao, the west wainscot of the cloister is embedded with stone inscriptions of The Three Letters of Yanlugong.
- Shiban Bending Bridge
To the east of the big pond lies a pavilion surrounded by water. At the side of the pavilion stands the Shiban Bending Bridge (used to be called Yuliang Bridge). It starts from Minglou Tower and extends to the corridor close to Banyue Terrace.
- Little Square Kettle
The four-corner square pavilion at the center of lake is called Little Square Kettle. By "Square Kettle", it refers to "the sacred mount in sea". Some believe that the square pavilion is a good place for opera performance because the lake water can echo voice and thus strengthen the acoustic effect.
