On the west bank of the Li River, 43 kilometers from Guilin City, a 400-meter-high hill soars steeply into the clouds with a huge precipice of naked rocks overhanging the river, obstructing the torrential southward river. It is the famous spot Half-Side Ferry.

The origin of the name

On each side of the hill, there is a village. These unique villages are Crown Cave village and Taoyuan village. A huge rock descends into the river and cuts off a footpath by the water edge. The come-and-go between Crown Cave and Taoyuan villages depends entirely on ferryboat. Different from other ferries, the ferries of these two villages are on the same side of the river, instead of opposite sides, hence the name Half-Side Ferry.

Overwhelming scenery

At Half-Side Ferry, mountain peaks tower towards the sky and the river flow dwindles. Surprisingly, trees and grasses take root between the narrow veins in the rock, beautifully growing against the stony backdrop as if hand-painted. Visitors arrive here and all marvel at the ruggedness and steepness of the countryside and the rarest of the world's ferries.

A funny saying

Opposite Half-Side Ferry is a village called Langzhou Village. Occasionally ferryboat cross the river, and when this happens three ports are used. Locals joke about this saying, "One ferryboat crosses the river, but needs to land three times."

  Generally speaking, the best time to visit Guilin is between April and October, when Guilin exhibits her immortal beauty.

  Guilin has a subtropical monsoon climate. The most important thing to know about Guilin (and Yangshuo) weather is that it can get very hot, humid, and it rains a lot! The rainy season begins from April in Guilin City, so please carry rain gear with you. The average temperature for the year is 19.3 centigrade with a July average temperature of 28.3 degrees. The average rainfall for the year is 192.6 cm per month.
