Guyi Garden Overview & Map Weather Transportation Information
The ancient Splendor Garden was first built in the Ming Dynasty, with a history of more than 400 years. Guyi Garden was built during the reign of Jiajing Emperor (1522 - 1566) of the Ming Dynasty. It was originally named "Yi Garden". "Yi" here means a beautiful sight of bamboo. The garden was designed by Zhu Shansong, a well-known bamboo-carving master living in the Ming Dynasty. Although the garden was originally only 10 mu in size, it had all the components characteristic of classic Chinese gardens such as the pavilions, the ponds, the twisted brooks and the artistic shaded paths. And there were relieves of bamboo scenes on every columns and rafters and in every corridors. In 1746 the garden was rebuilt and enlarged. And since then the garden has had the name Guyi Garden.
Why to visit
Guyi Garden has all the components of classic Chinese gardens such as the pavilions, the ponds, the twisted brooks and the artistic shaded paths. The garden has all the attributes of gardens of the Ming Dynasty, pretty, delicate, elegant and simple. Some valuable cultural relics such as the stone pillar inscribed with Buddhist scriptures from the Tang Dynasty and the pagoda built in the Song Dynasty are well preserved in the garden.
Five main features
The five main features of Guyi Garden are stretches of bamboo forest, winding brooks, ancient buildings, couplets written on scrolls and artistic pavements.
Who designed it
Built during the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644) by a county official named Min Shiji, Guyi is regarded one of the oldest gardens in Shanghai. Designed by a renowned bamboo sculptor Zhu Sansong, the garden is graced with bamboo patterns everywhere -- on columns, pavilions and corridors.
Getting around
Up to now the garden has been added to many times, and now it covers an area of 146 mu. The garden is made up of six scenic sections. They are the Recluse Hall, the Goose Pond, the Pine-and-Crane Yard, the Green-and-Clean Garden, the Mandarin-Duck Lake and the Nanxiang Screen Wall. Each section has its distinctive layout.
The garden has all the qualities typical of gardens of the Ming Dynasty, pretty, delicate, elegant but simple. Moreover, there are some valuable cultural relics such as the stone pillar inscribed with Buddhist scriptures from the Tang Dynasty and the pagoda built in the Song Dynasty. There is a special pavilion built during the years of Anti-Japanese War. The pavilion was built with one of its corner incompleted, which was intended to remind the visitors that a part of China's territory was then under Japanese occupation.
The garden has its unique style with exquisite pavilions and chambers, artistic studies and long corridors, pebble paths and winding streams, old twisted locust trees, and flowers of all seasons.
Snack to try
Don't forget to sample "xiaolong bao," the authentic steamed stuffed buns, in the garden's restaurant, which usually sells 40,000 buns everyday. Also on offer during the tourism festival is a boat trip to Chongming Island to experience farming and fishing.

Bamboo Cultural Festival
Date: September 18 - October 14
Festival exhibits dozens of bamboo artworks and 20 colorful bamboo water paintings created by Qin Changbao, whose nickname is "bamboo mania." From October 1 the garden will also be decorated with 999 red lanterns. The garden itself is an ancient relic.

What should we need to know when visiting Shanghai in different seasons?
The four seasons are easy to tell apart. The weather is pleasant, and the number of all kinds of products is large in Spring and Autumn.
Every June and July is the mold rain season, so it is usually humid in hotel rooms. Umbrella is a necessary thing to bring with during the rainy weather.
The coldest time is from late January to early February. Even though there is not much snow, warm clothes are still needed, because cold wind is always unendurable. Hotel rooms are equipped with air-conditions, so please stay warm in the room.

Guyi Garden is situated in Nanxiang Town, Jiading district, which is to the northwest of the city of Shanghai. It is about 21 kilometers from the garden to the centre of the city. It is one of the five famous classical gardens of Shanghai and one of the oldest places of historical interest in Shanghai and a well-known Chinese classic garden in the southeast of China.
