Great Wall at Hushan Overview & Map Weather Transportation Information
The Great Wall, one of the greatest wonders of the world, was enlisted in the World Heritage in 1987. The wall was built in stages from the 5th century BC up to the 16th century AD as protection against northern nomadic tribes. Stretching from the bank of the Yalu River in the east and ending at the Jiayu Pass in the west, it snakes along the back of mountains, deserts and valleys for 6,350km (3900 miles).
With a history of more than 2000 years, some sections are now in ruins or even entirely disappeared. However, it is still one of the most appealing attractions all around the world owing to its architectural grandeur and historical significance. It is said to be one of the only two human engineering projects visible by astronauts from space with the naked eye.
In fact the Great Wall extends considerably further east than Shanhaiguan. In 1992, archeologists announced that Hushan Great Wall, in Liaoning Province, is the real eastern terminus of the Wall.
Built during the Ming Dynasty, Hushan Great Wall is located in Kuandian Manchu Autonomous County, about 40 kilometers away from the Dandong City, with the Yalu River to the south and the Yuan River to the west.
Covering an area of 4 square kilometers, with the main peak of 146.3 meters, Hushan Great Wall resembles a lying tiger, hence the name "Tiger Mountain Great Wall."
Hushan Great Wall, built of earth, wood and rock, took more than 150 years to complete. Having suffered from winds and rains for more than 500 years, Hushan Great Wall was greatly dilapidated. In 1992, the central government gave a full-scale repair to the wall. Now, the renovated Hushan Great Wall includes 12 platforms and 3 Beacon Towers with a total length of 1200 meters. Bangshan Platform is the eastern end, or start, of the Great Wall.
The wall connects with the natural cliffs in places, forming a formidable barrier. From the top of the wall, the iron bridge straddling the Yalu River, which marks the border between China and North Korea, and the North Korean city of Sinuju is clearly visible.
